    Any Carpenters In The House

Ok for you that are any type of carpenters. Here's my problem. I'm building a 36' x 24' weight room. I want no center poles inside to hold the roof up. I was thinking of building a center beam that runs the full length AND SET IT ON TOP THE BLOCK WALLS. 36' is this possibe and how do i do it. Well sorry the drawing didn't show up. any ways i want a box beam 3 foot high by 36 foot long. Is this possible

I have tons of friends who are builders. I know it's possible I just don't know how they calculate the size for the load bearing headers
I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

See what you can find out about an engineered lumber beam...

I have several that support this specially cantilevered portion of my kitchen...

I don't think you will need steel or Iron, but a manufactured truss is cool

36' by 24'? I think you'll want an architect for that one.. it will also vary with your local building codes.(Like homes in Maine would want a roof that doesnt cave in, and homes in Florida want a roof that doesnt come off )

Im kind of a Carpenter (I do home remodeling... but that ventures off into alot of stuff including new construction and alot of permit-required-so-well-just-do-it-on-the-weekend work ) and I wouldnt feel comfortable making a guess on that myself. Its definitely possible though. Worst case scenario would involve abnormally thick walls, and (a) steel beam(s).

    Engineered Adobe then?

Just curious, why do you live in Mexico? You travel across into the US alot, right? Is it just cheaper, or family? (Or do you just like Mexico? )

    1) No permits required in Mexico unless it's a commercial building. Hell you can put up a house with palm leaves if you want.
    2) My first wife gets half my pension for the rest of her life. I no longer feel liking working so Mexico here i come as I can live on the other half

Not even close to being a builder but why not do something like this.

A few beams across the 24'

In the extra high area you could make a storage loft. If that slope is facing south it will make a perfect platform for solar panels when you find the need.

but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

Well lets put it this way...

From what I can recall from your construction pics,
there is some sort of door or opening dirctly in the center
of the short side wall of that room (at one end for sure)

This means whatever type of beam you use will have to be reinforced...

I.E. - You can't just lean a beam on that wall...

Let me ask you this, what is the standard roofing MATL in your area
asphalt shingles, or spanish tile, steel, other?

The weight of the roof will dictate what level of support you need..

You should be able to do some simple addition, then, over-shoot
the needed weight REQ and be home free

i dont know if its a good idea... 36' is a long way to span with no telepost. i kinda doubt it man. i remember putting a 3 ply 14" timerstrand beam in a 2-car garage of a bilevel to hold up the master bedroom and the roof. i cant remember how long the beam was (or how wide the garage was for that matter) prolly around 24'. I highly doubt you can get timberstrands 36' long and the second you start putting joints in a beam over a long span like that you almost always need teleposts.

Is this what you want the layout to be like?

Edit: those are supposed to be 2' on center trusses
