NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wladimir Klitschko survived three knockdowns to score a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Samuel Peter in a heavyweight fight Saturday night in Atlantic City.
Klitschko was knocked down twice in the fifth round and once more in the 10th, but he threw twice as many punches as his Nigerian opponent to get the nod on all three judges' scorecards.
All the judges scored the fight 114-111 for the Ukrainian.
"It means a lot," Klitschko said at ringside after the fight. "Now I'm number one (contender).
"I can fight 12 rounds, no problem, as you can see. I enjoyed the fight."
The 29-year-old Klitschko (45-3, 40 KOs) used his strong jab to keep Peter at a distance for most of the fight and, even though Peter complained he was held numerous times, Klitschko clearly won the majority of the 12 rounds.
"It's not easy," Peter said at ringside. "He beat me, what can I say?"
The younger brother of former WBC champion Vitali now becomes the number one contender for the IBF titles.
Peter (24-1, 21 KOs) will likely request a rematch due to the closeness of the fight. It looked like he would put away his taller opponent in the fifth, when he sent him to the canvas twice,
One was due to a blow to the back of the head...illegal and the other was a push down....do these fucking writers even watch the fights ????? but Klitschko showed a resiliency that may have been missing from some of his more recent fights.
The 25-year-old Peter had a 6-inch
Wrong!!! it is a 4 inch differance height disadvantage and was looking for a knockout punch most of the night. He did last longer than seven rounds for just the third time in his largely untested career, however, although he appeared confused at times by Klitschko's style and quickness.
The Ukrainian rebounded after the near disastrous fifth to take control once again, but was knocked down again in the 10th and appeared to be shaky on his feet as the round came to an end.
But once again Klitschko recovered and carried the fight in the last two rounds to secure the victory.
Klitschko will now get a shot at IBF champion Chris Byrd, whom he defeated in 2000 to win his WBO title.
On the under card, Miguel Cotto rallied from an early knockdown to stop Ricardo Torres in the seventh round to win the WBO 140-pound title.
Cotto (25-0) knocked Torres down four times, the last one ending the fight with a hard right to the side of the head, followed by a left hook as Torres (28-1) slumped off the ropes and onto the canvas in the junior welterweight bout.
A moment of silence was observed before the main event to remember Leavander Johnson, who died on Thursday after suffering severe brain injuries in a fight Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Klitschko earned $1.5 million for the fight to Peter's $900,000.
