Yes... I am loading Pinnacle Studio

But, last time I tried to use this software to record from VCR
to 'puter the quality was unwatchable

Monkey I have studio 8 also. I use a usb wire to download mine. once it's connected just go to studio and click play and record if I remember right.

Hey thanx PT... I will try and get the Mini-DV Cable, that is what I really need...
I have it going out through RCA CABLES -

It's working but I'll bet I can up the quality a ton if I do it right!

You should have firewire on the cam no? And one in your computer, a 1394 cardeh? in a slot or on-board? Every editing app has a capture/device controller feature. Connect the cam to the computer, via the cable, turn on the cam, open up the software, and then open up the device control/capture utility. What you then do is capture, or record, to hard drive.

Once the video/audio is on the hard drive you can do what you want with it. You can edit it and build a storyline or re-compress to MPEG-2 to make a DVD. Remember even tho USB-2 supposedly faster 1394 is far better then USB for video.

I know you have it working but I didnt want to miss an opportunity to show how much smarter I am then any of you. If you want to know anything about video just ask your uncle.................Uncle Rich..........

Mine was firewire, SVideo is for playback or using it for monitoring. It is not for a data dump.

Since its USB sounds like, unless thats 2.0 its going to be WICKED slow. An hour of video is also going to be HUGE, so I hope you have tons of space. Just a few moments of raw data for me was 80 megs, I think that was about a minute or so but I forget. Compression is a wonderful thing.

Your software will probably tell you what VCR quality is, its something ridiculously low resolution wise, lower than VCD. I just dont remember.

Poke around the camera for other connections, did you find any? If its mini DV it needs to have a data output, rather than just the standard outputs like RCA/SVideo and so on. Your software can also control the cameras playback/stop mechanism through this connection. Most of them will be firewire (there is a second generation thats even faster).

You can go to the MFG site too. I had to buy a firewire card because they weren't common in PCs since it was more of a MAC thing. Intel created USB just to be different, which was far far inferior to Firewire for speed back then (no I'm not a MAC lover).

My mini DV was a 680kpixel (entry level), and the max record from the cam was 720x480 @ 30 FPS.

Quality came through good (surprise) with the RCA hookup
But I actually turned it down a notch to save space

DV is DV, no matter what BUS you use to transfer it. The video/audio is mildly compressed inside the camera at 5 to 1 using the DV algorithim. It doesnt matter how you capture it its going to be the same size. MPEG-2, the algorithim used as the standard for DVD, on the other hand, can be adjusted for size.

MPEG= MotionPicturesExpertsGroup. MPEG-2. In it you can make video and audio streams separate,or, make them together.

What is actually on the DVD itself is the 0's and 1's of MPEG-2 and the audio. These 0's and 1's are burned at a per second rate, or bytes called "bits". A higher bit rate give you better video/audio quality but will allow you to fit less on a DVD. A lower rate gives you visa-versa. Generaly when you have a small enough file to burn you want to use a CBR, or constant bit rate. A larger movie to burn might do best with a VBR, or variable bit rate. Video files that have a lot of action and movement in them wont burn well at a low bit rate. The more movement, or worse lighting, the higher the bit rate you want to use.

With a VBR the software decides at what rate to burn the material. You give it parameters to follow, like a VBR high of 7500 per sec, and low of 4500 per sec. The software will adjust the bit rate for the type of material being encoded.

When I make a professional video I shoot in DV, dump it to hard drive, edit it, and then convert the material to MPEG-2. With that I build the DVD project with menus, surround audio streams, and linked chapter buttons just like any other DVD you buy.

But DV is DV. You have some control over file size by adjusting how you capture the audio but generally your going to get 4&1/2 minutes of video/audio per gigabyte of storage. Thats why I have 1200 gigs of super fast storage. For a typical project I will need 150 gigs. While on paper USB-2 can move data faster it doesnt do it with video/audio files as effeciently as does 1394 which is a data bus made specifically for digital video. Now we have 1394b, I have two cards in my system and a 1394b external hard drive. 1394b is twice as fast as 1394, much faster then USB-2, and is constructed to be most effecient with video.

We are living in wonderful times when anyone, with a small investment, can make lovely video librarys of their lives and familys. And they can do so easily with plug and play that really is plug and play. You should see what we went thru in the early 90s, we DV pioneers. Back then a 4 gig hard drive was big and we spent more time with our systems apart then together.

Sorry it took me so long but I swear I have so many problems on this site truing to post or reply. To many fucking people or something on it. I go through this all day long. I'm not going to change bodybuilding sites as I love this one, but I don't have any other problems with any of the others.

Now I don't have mine installed cause I just re did windows, but if I remember right as you get ready to download it, it gives you options on the different types of formats to download it.
Tell you Pinn gave me so many problems before that I stopped using it and started using a different software.
Hey I just went back and look at my software that I haven't installed yet and I used Roxio video wave. I was a lot simpler for me.
