Pat Metheny is incredible!! Defenitly one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Bill Frissel and John Scofied are also some of my favs. For old time guitar players I can appreciate what wes montgomery did but he is not my fav. I loved Jim hall a lot. Ben Monder is absolutly incrdeible with what he can do on the insturment and Kurt Rosenwinkle is an amazing musician as well. My old teacher MIck Goodrick also plays some really nice stuff and was an inspiration to all the others that have since come down the pike. That is for the Jazz guys.
For the rock guys Steve Vai, Satriani, and Eric Johnson are brilliant technicians. Hendrix, Page, Jeff Beck were amazing from that era.
For the Blues Stevie Ray takes the cake! Robin Ford was also amazing.

From the other thread:
*************"Best" is subjective.
If I were to say best at actually playing.
It would have to be Joe Satriani.
He is one of the, if not the fastest, best shredder.
But Stevie Ray Vaugh would have to be the "best" because of every thing he's done.
It's kind of like comparing Arnold to Ronnie. Ronnie is the "better", he is much more massive and cut then Arnold ever was.
But Arnold was the best in the sport, for all the things he did for it.
You dig?
However my Favorite has to be Kirk Hammett from Metallica followed by...
I guess Eddie Van Halen...I can't think of anyone else at the moment for some reason.***************
Guitarists can't really be compared.Originally Posted by min0 lee

that list is too crappy to vote on.
Still Alive.
13 Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead
my personal favorite...

he likes Vai but he plays and enjoys a lot of styles, he sent me some blues stuff n it is amazing but blues is not his favorite by far says it is repetative it is my favorite n he says cuz it is pure emotion (i am so driven by emotion sometimes i think it drives him nuts). i told him about this thread n he says there is no best says for him it's about how a player touches you emotionally...

I'd say a tie between Jimi Hendrix and Robert Johnson
