Flea is my favorite, don't really know who is best.
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

I agree on Cliff Burton, he is definitely up there. I dont know how Metallica could have gone from Cliff to Newstead, from one of the greatest, to one of the crappiest...

Jaco was innovative, not the best though.

Cliff was unique, Jason just hid in the mix pretty much. The bassists I named are known for popping out of the mix.

playing songs using primarily harmonics (FREAKING HARD BTW) is crazy innovative. Ive not seen it since, nor before. Like I said, great, innovative, not the best. Flea is good but overrated. Cant deny his skills though. Mike Todd is the new king of prog, hands down.

Jason just sucked, like, mad crappy.

Pick harmonicks? I remember hearing that Cliff was very good with his fingers and rarely used a pick.

I'm a 6 string guitarist so the only harmonics I am really familiar with as a metal style player, are pick or "pinch" harmonics, or not fretting the string fully.

    There is no "best."

But there are those that standout because of the ability and style.

Yep. Techinal wise he might not have been the best, but his live performances were electric. He was a professional performer as well as a great bass player.

with out a doubt, Les Claypool has to be the best or one of them. He can play some awesome bass.
