Just a short note from me because a lot of people have questions about what this site is really about. Is it entertainment? Is it black exploitation? Is it glorifying ignorance? Is it some kind of Black Power thing? Just what is it trying to say?
This site is a call-to-arms of sorts to all of us to re-examine how we are looking but more importantly, how we are living, because too often the two go hand in hand. Consider this site constructive criticism.
I do not intend to denigrate or stereotype African-Americans---I only hold up a mirror so don’t blame me if you don’t like what you see. This site wags a shameful finger at those who bring us all down with their foolishness. Because unfortunately, you represent us all when you go out into the streets like this, act like this, go to work like this, spit lyrics like this…
And while mess comes in all shapes, sizes and colors, too often the “mess” that pervades the Black community is much more destructive to us as a culture and it threatens our very ability to survive and thrive as a race.
But neither is this an elitist or classist endeavor. Money has nothing to do with it. A lot of folks in these pictures are doing just fine, thanks. Check out the Celebrity Mess section to see that money doesn’t equal class. Alternatively, look at old photos of African-Americans in the 1920’s-1960’s when we didn’t have a pot to piss in, but damn we looked good, we had class and style and pride in our image.
From school to music to clothing to behavior, where have our standards gone? Are we now to accept any and everything? And if our own can’t come out and point out what’s wrong, how can we ever get better? Why do we so often condemn the people who point out what’s wrong rather than condemning the behavior?
And to all of you who are angry at me for airing our dirty laundry-- good, I’m glad you’re angry, now maybe collectively, we’ll be forced to finally go wash it.
Don’t get me wrong, a lot of the stuff is funny and included to entertain, but in the administration of the site I try not to lose sight of the big picture.
I enjoy interacting with those of you who provide feedback, insight, criticism and offer ways I can improve the site. A few of you have offered me a few four-letter words and that’s cool too.
Hotghettomess.com is by no means perfect and I am always open to suggestions as to how to improve it. But I do know this: I only have the best interest of my community at heart. Some of you may disagree with the technique and that’s cool, we can agree to disagree on the method as long as our goals are the same, the enlightenment of my dear black community and anyone else who happens to be listening.
Peace,
