    Worst earthquake in modern history

The death toll from the earthquake in Pakistan hits 79,000.... makes Katrina look like a hiccup. Interesting that the Atlanta paper barely gives this natural disaster much coverage. How is the coverage elsewhere or are is our news media somewhat myopic about the rest of the world?

The coverage in WI is scant. But that's pretty much in line with the national interest level. Not many people, I would presume, have any tie to or interest in Pakistan. Amazing how 79,000 dead does not capture the media spotlight the way the disappearance of the comely Natalee Holloway did.

How was Katrina covered in Pakistan or is this a one-sided myopathy?

The tsunami was covered pretty well here, but that is prolly cuz a good amount of Americans were there.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

since most of the area affected did not have TVs or a real media to speak ofI don't expect coverage to be on par with anyone else in the first world countries. I suspect it is just due to general disinterest in something that did not affect alot of Americans as you stated.

79,000 people is a lot...This stuff happens when you live in clay brick houses. Lower developed countries never have a prayer in natural disasters. People think we have poor response time for these events...look at the rest of the world before you point the finger at our local/state/federal gov'ts.

Believe me, that's no big feat. Plamegate, Medicare fraud, Iraqgate, Abu Grahib, Town Hall propaganda, conflict of interest-no bid contracts, Crony Capitalism, Katrina mismanagement etc.

Besides, are there any conservative leaders left out there in the Buckley/Burke mold? I don't think so.

Now, back to our normal programming.

Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads

I don't think you can compare these two natural disasters. The earthquake claimed a shitload of lives, but it was in fact an earthquake, and they dont jiggle around out at sea for a few days before making landfall. The people in Katrinas path had an idea that somethin was a brewin' (how everyone reacted does not matter here). The people in Pakistan had no idea, making it much more devastating. If I run at you with a hammer screaming, about to belt you in the head, you have time to prepare for the onslaught, but if I clock you when your not looking, your survival is purely based on how hard I hit you, because you had no reaction time. I have heard that global warming is melting the tectonic plates, but a Democrat told me thats George Bush's fault and in part my fault too because I voted for him.

Personally, I think that news like that is worthless. But there are people who dig that crap. So, from now on, it's news that only maniclion deems fit.

Here there is no coverage as well. Today I saw in a small part of the news that about half a million people need immediate assistance.

people cry about of governments, but when a disaster of equal or worse destruction in a LDC occurs there gov't response is horrible...obviously b/c they are poor. I think people forget how good we have it sometimes...compared to others who do not even have tents yet.

I guess hotel room and trailers beat that...for a little while

I saw your point the first time...................very scary logic
about the same as saying its better to die from a gun shot wound to the head...rather than one in the stomach..........because the head shot will kill you quicker and cause less pain

No, and I really cannot remember when the Democratic party was as toothless and ineffectual as it is now....opposition parties should oppose not disappear. The eRemember, it is the republican party that has majority interest in the Presidency, Senate, House and arguably the Supreme Court. Judging by the results of the past 5 years, I'd say the ball has been dropped.

In the spirit of the thread, has anyone heard what kind of relief the US will send to Pakistan?

Jennifer and Vince kissed??!! Wow, they are great. They're so talented. Entertainment Tonight is going to be off the fucking charts. (Though that show never really did recover after Tesh left)
