Metro police said the victim was a Chinese food delivery man who was leaving a dorm on the Tennessee State University campus when he was shot and killed.
“As far as I know this is the first time we’ve ever had a homicide on the campus,” said Duane Phillips with the Metro Police Department.
The shooting and carjacking happened just after 6:00 Monday night outside Hankal Residence Center at TSU. Students at the university said they couldn't believe something happened so violent on campus.
“I didn’t hear any gun shots, but my roommate, she came to my room and got me and she said she walked up on it, and he was just laying on the ground gasping for air,” said TSU student Danielle Harshaw.
Police said the victim was a popular delivery man at Best Wok, a Chinese restaurant just off the TSU campus. According to authorities, the victim went into the dorm and delivered the food. When he came back out, two men approached him and demanded his money. The victim struggled with the robbers before the suspects shot him twice, then took his money and his car.
The victim was taken to a local hospital where he died. Police said they did not believe the men responsible for the murder are not students at Tennessee State.
The victim's car, which the suspects used to leave the scene, is a White Honda Civic with license plate number RTJ-017.
Surveillance cameras were installed earlier this year inside the dorms at TSU as part of an attempt to step up security, but police said they weren't sure if the cameras captured any of the crime Monday night.
