My freshman year of college I pledged a fraternity, and while pledging sucked, it was a lot of fun when I was done. I bet you'll catch a lot of shit from people saying fraternities suck ass, but i loved it. But be careful, being in one can make it hard to stay on top of school if you're not careful. I lived in the fraternity house one semester and did horrible in school, so I quit the fraternity all together and it has made it much easier for me to stay focused on school. But that's just me. just do it if you want to. No point in going through a bunch of shitty hazing (if your fraternity does that) if you don't want to be a brother.

It all depends on what school you go to ...some places "greek" life dominates and if you are not part of it you are an "independant" w/ no life.

At my school you get made fun of if your in a frat or sorority...We have 30,000 student w/ only 14 houses...frat and sorority combined. I defintely have a negative connotation...being fake, but that is just a sophisticated stereotype.

I'll bet it will be real fun for incoming freshman...just remember to save up for those thousand dollar dues

The dues are very expensive, especially if you live in the house. If your school's greek system is pretty popular, and your fraternity has a nice house, you'll probably pay around $3000 a semester and around $5000 if you live in the house, but those are all things you need to think about before joining. I had fun when I did it, but Ive also had just as much fun since I quit the fraternity 3 years ago, and am doing much better in school since I dont have all the distractions. It's not like the only way to have a life is to be in a fraternity.

well its mainly a commuting school...the dues are 65 dollars a month or every 3 weeks or so. to live in the house i believe is 200 dollars a month.

    Nay
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

Fraternities are a great way to build strong friendships, play competitive sports, party with sororities, experience leadership oportunities among brothers/friends and learn about being a part of an organization. I was in a fraternity for four years. It was a blast.

TKE's seem to be crazy everywhere ... too bad they got caught at Central Michigan....and lost their charter (along with about 5 other groups)

I'm an SAE. I'm inactive now, but it was a good experience when I was in college. Good way to meet girls. When I lived in the house, pullin ass was even easier cause of band parties.

    There's no correct answer.

The issue I had against the greek system was paying money to get in and also the time it takes away from school, work and lifting/sports. Plus you have to endure the hazing. I guess I'm just too proud/arrogant to allow that to happen to me. I don't dig the idea of eating pizza with semen on it, or running around in a bra and panties in public, or getting whacked on the bare ass with a paddle.

But if you have rich parents who will pay your dues and support you such that you don't need a part time job, then it could be worth it if you're highly into the social scene. I partied plenty even without being in a frat, but in retrospect I think it was harder to meet chicks and get laid than frat guys. No biggie though.

Some guys are lone wolves, while others need to travel in packs. It just depends on what floats your boat, I guess.

Here was why I went against the greek system.

Here are the benefits of greek life
1)Even though you are brothers, there are still going to be a couple of dickheads.
2)You are required to do charity work, which is not a problem necessarily.
3)Meetings you are required to go to.
    4)Parties
5)You have to pay to get in

Now, the problem I had was that it cost $500 to be able to do stuff that an outgoing person can do for free.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

Actually Dale, my dues were a lot more than 500, but TO ME, for the quality of bands we were able to get with that amount of money, rent out balcony bars in New Orleans, take rushees to MLB games, etc, it was a good time. and to SubliminalX- we didnt do any geigh sh1t, including eating sperm laden pizza. Those are just fear factors instilled upon rushees, etc to keep them guessing while they are pledges. When people drop out or dont pledge, they just assume those rumors were true and they spread them like tabloids at the walmart checkout line. We were able to get big names like Afroman and Pat Green to come and play at our parties and it was worth the money.

I agree with you Dale on your 1-5 list. But I disagree with the notion that an outgoing person can do the same stuff. With 130 guys in a frat, all paying hefty dues, that money together will allow for certain amenities that an independent likely would not have. Like renting out bars in new orleans, big name bands, etc. But I do partially agree with you on that. Oh, and no I wasnt in a band....the only instruments I play are duck and turkey calls. MinO lee said you were good at playing the skin flute though!

Go to sorority socials, hang out at the house, formals, your socials, etc. The hazing sucks (well, depends on where you are, mine did ) but it is a weeding out tool for the people who really dont want it. Dont take sh1t personal, if they didnt want you there, you would not have gotten a bid to join.

Yeah I know, I was exaggerating about the ghey stuff. But there are pledges who die every year from hazing, both men and women. It takes a submissive person to allow themselves to be hazed, under any circumstances.
