Thousand cars torched in latest French riots

PARIS (Reuters) - Gangs of youths torched 1,300 vehicles overnight in the 10th consecutive night of violence in Paris's poor suburbs and major French towns, despite the deployment of thousands of extra police.

Cars were burned out in the historic center of Paris for the first time on Saturday night. In the normally quiet Normandy town of Evreux, a shopping mall, 50 vehicles, a post office and two schools went up in flames.

Authorities have so far found no way beyond appeals and more police to address a problem with complex social, economic and racial causes.

Evreux mayor Jean-Louis Debre, a confidant of President Jacques Chirac and speaker of the lower house of parliament, told France Info radio:

"To those responsible for the violence, I want to say: Be serious ... If you want to live in a fairer, more fraternal society, this is not how to go about it."

The deaths 10 days ago of two youths apparently fleeing police ignited pent up frustrations among young men, many of them Muslims of North and black African origin, at racism, unemployment, their marginal place in French society and their treatment by the police.

"Many youths have never seen their parents work and couldn't hold down a job if they got one," said Claude Chevallier, manager of a burned-out carpet depot in the rundown Paris suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois.

But authorities now say the rolling nightly riots are being organized via the Internet and mobile phones, and have pointed the finger at drug traffickers and Islamist militants.

Overnight, 1,295 vehicles were torched across France, the highest total so far, police said. An extra 2,300 officers have been drafted in.

Seven police helicopters buzzed over the Paris region through the night, filming disturbances and directing mobile squads to incidents. Overnight, police made 349 arrests.

The number of incidents in the Paris region was similar to the night before, but in the provinces it was up sharply

    TARNISHED IMAGE

The violence has tarnished France's image abroad, forcing Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin to cancel a trip to Canada, while Russia and the United States have warned their citizens to avoid Paris's troubled suburbs.

Villepin has combined a call for an end to the riots with dialogue with community leaders, youngsters and local officials, and has promised an action plan for 750 tough neighborhoods.

"I'll make proposals as early as this week," the weekly Journal du Dimanche quoted him as saying.

But it remained unclear what could stop the violence, though some opposition parties have suggested a symbolic measure -- the resignation of Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.

Accused of stoking passions by calling troublemakers "scum", Sarkozy has ignored calls to quit. A survey published on Sunday indicated his public image was holding up, even if many disapproved of his strong language.

Villepin also has ambitions to be the right wing's presidential candidate in 2007 and has tried to position himself as a much more consensual figure than Sarkozy; the effect on the crisis on his ratings is still unclear.

With no end in sight to the nights of wailing sirens, acrid smoke, stone-throwing and destruction, residents from all ethnic backgrounds are tiring of the unrest.

"My kids can't sleep at night," said a mother named Samia in Aulnay-sous-Bois. "They hear explosions, they see fires and they think they're in a war. When the slightest thing happens, they get anxious and say 'Mama, what's going on?'"

Ditto, Though Im not aware of any IM'ers in France? At least not in open chat(where my office is based:P)

If anyone wants a long read, I posted this on another board earlier.. I figured this board has had enough politics but since it came up..

"The violence erupted Oct. 27 following the accidental electrocution of two teenagers who hid in a power substation, apparently believing police were chasing them."

"Attackers doused the woman, in her 50s and on crutches, with a flammable liquid and set her afire as she tried to get off a bus in the suburb of Sevran Wednesday, judicial officials said. The bus had been forced to stop because of burning objects in its path."

"Violence continued into the evening for the ninth night in a row with troublemakers firing bullets into a vandalized bus and setting a warehouse ablaze in the Paris area."
And Ill bet my hard earned money those bullets didnt come from a legally possessed firearm.

"In one attack, youths in the eastern Paris suburb of Meaux prevented paramedics from evacuating a sick person from a housing project. They pelted rescuers with rocks and then torched the waiting ambulance, an Interior Ministry official said. "

    These poor, impoverished kids..
"But within gangs, he added, youths are communicating by cell phones or e-mails. "
High cell phone bills forcing them to live on Mcdonalds.. they're probably living in fear of getting fat. Damn you T-Mobile, Damn you.

"The anger over the death of the teenagers spread to the Internet, with sites mourning the youths.
Along with messages of condolence and appeals for calm were insults targeting police, threats of more violence and warnings that the unrest will feed support for France's anti-immigration extreme right."
Yup, wouldnt want to discourage France from letting everyone in, its worked so well this far.

So anyways, the part that has me laughing..

"Children's photos clung to the blackened walls, and melted plastic toys littered the floor. Residents gathered at the school gate, demanding that the army be deployed or suggesting that citizens band together to protect their neighborhoods. "

Yes, quickly, call the,"professional target shooters" to defend your neighborhood!

That may be their best, but also only option as I would strongly suggest against them standing in the streets with pitch forks(Are those legal in France??) and baseball bats. Shockingly enough apparently the criminals(aka rioters) are known to have illegally aquired firearms.. If you wanna be in the street with a baseball bat, at least go prone

For those of you not familiar with France's laws, heres the last update I know of-

"The state could authorise gun ownership only for:

    Members of the military.

Members of a certified sporting association. -- Professional target shooters.

Individuals who require a weapon to exercise their profession.

Individuals whose physical safety is seriously threatened."

I wonder if anyone in Paris is trying to obtain permission to buy a firearm right now, due to their physical saftey being seriously threatened? They're probably being turned away on the premise that,"By the time your paperwork is done the riot will be under control" .. "lol owned"

Reminds me of the story of the LA riots, where two Korean people were standing on the roof of their business with AKs and suprisingly enough it went untouched.

(Just for note, Im not implying that I laugh at the victims of this riot, but rather all the French who politically supported their,"gun control" to this level)
I put the firearms focus in this post as this is from a forum reguarding firearms laws.

I also like the spin the news tried "The deaths 10 days ago of two youths apparently fleeing police", trying to make it sound like the police killed them.

All major news organizations are not to be trusted.

So these kids were obviously not doing anything wrong. I know that when I have not done anything wrong my first instinct is to run from the po-po.

The riots began just days after Sarkozy's launch of a controversial crackdown on crime in the country's tough suburbs.

The minister's aggressive language, in which he referred to rioters as "scum" and vowed "to clean out" troubled suburbs, led to accusations from both the Socialist opposition and from within his own party that he was fanning the violence. Police unions have also joined the chorus of criticism, castigating Sarkozy's decision to end neighbourhood policing and complaining that his declared war on delinquency is making their job increasingly difficult and dangerous.

But Sarkozy stubbornly defended himself. "I speak with real words," he told the popular daily, Le Parisien. "When you fire real bullets at police, you're not a 'youth', you're a thug."

The media-hungry Sarkozy has also been accused of trying to capitalise on the situation to boost his own visibility ahead of the presidential race.

But in the suburbs, young residents are united in their anger over the interior minister's incendiary language and his "lack of respect".

"Sarko must shut up. Either he apologises or he resigns, instead of coming to spread chaos in the suburbs like Bush in Iraq," one 16-year-old said.

"When I see what is happening now, I always come back to this image: Sarkozy in Argenteuil [a troubled Paris suburb], raising his head and saying: 'Madame, I am going to clean all of this away.' The result? By playing the superhero, the control freak, Sarko has made everyone go crazy. He showed a total lack of respect to everyone," said Christophe, 22, a student.

Franck Cannarozzo, a deputy mayor of Aulnay-sous-Bois, added: "We see among the rioters kids of 13 to 15, who are swept along, who are encouraged to take all the risks, and the others, the ringleaders, who are used to creating trouble - they terrorise everyone, and don't want to stop. Rather than playing on their PlayStations, they attack the police."

I would say moreso forced, and moreso impoverished than anywhere else in the world! But we're talking about France where people have the ability to move out of that.. Besides, statistics show men are 9 times more likely to be forced to live in impoverished conditions than women.

Bad shit and all but this is no way to solve anything.
It's a matter of time before the army will come in and kill everyone that lights a car on fire, burns down a school(!) or kills a police man.
so what are they gonna do then? if they where realistic about doing this shit they would take a place where they could hide like a headquarters, something like a big museum or a castle, well at least something with a lot of expensive stuff in there, but do not carry guns ( well just don't show or use them unless they come in and threaten your life, then you can pull out your g3a3 and shoot a couple of coppers, with is always a good thing as long as you get away with it!)
and whats this shit with all these other places that are getting hit also?
