What is the maximum hard disk size I can put in a Gateway G6-266 Mhz?

Specs: Intel AL440LX, latest Gateway BIOS revision (P18), 192 Mb RAM
(not that that matters), original 4 Gb harddisk and 32 speed Mitsumi
CD-ROM (both installed as masters), running Windows 98SE.

I want to install the drive as a slave. Would a 60 or 80 Gb drive work?
If not, would a 2.5" laptop drive work? Any recommended models (NOT
Maxtor, too bad experiences with those...)?

Without some added extra, you're limited to 8.4G.

You'll need either a controller card with its own BIOS or a software
overlay to go larger.

The BIOS does support LBA, I just checked.

Gateway's support pages say the following:

"The motherboard provides two independent bus-mastering PCI IDE
interfaces that support programmed I/O (PIO) Mode 3, Mode 4 and Ultra
ATA devices. The computer basic input/output system (BIOS) supports
Logical Block Addressing (LBA) and Extended Cylinder Sector Head (ECHS)
translation modes as well as ATA Packet Interface (ATAPI) devices on
both IDE interfaces. "

So...what can it support?

Thomas,

A relative of mine has the same computer. We added a 40GB hard drive very
easily by getting an Ultra Controller card. You plus insert it in a PCI
slot, install the drivers, and plug the hard drive cable into the card.
I've used Western Digital hard drives for 10 years, and I've found them
to be highly reliable drives.

IF (A BIG IF) anyone is left who can remember the model. I recall a few years
ago that Gateway's own technical knowledge of its 486 products went to almost
zero.

Given that the board was made by Intel with a BIOS essentially unchanged by
Gateway (except for the Gateway splash screen), Intel or an Intel forum might be
a better source of info... Ben Myers

This Intel info would seem to indicate the board can handle larger than
8.4GB, up to 137

Eh, figured he could try. I parted out my G6-3xx long ago, but I bugged

It's worth a shot if he can't find it elsewhere.

That's an old Gateway, which is still covered by the free lifetime tech

IF (A BIG IF) anyone is left who can remember the model. I recall a few years
ago that Gateway's own technical knowledge of its 486 products went to almost
zero.

Given that the board was made by Intel with a BIOS essentially unchanged by
Gateway (except for the Gateway splash screen), Intel or an Intel forum might be
a better source of info... Ben Myers

Bit nervous about questioing you Ed as you are very good, but I have
the exact set up that the original questioner has but I threw in a
15Gb IBM hard drive and I am sure I did not have to add any overlay

number of partitions. If I recall, BIOS did support LBA? (or whatever
it called).

Machine is not connected at moment (its been retired), but if you want
me check anything to confirm one way or another - let me know. I can
connect it back up and check.

Oops...I mean you "just" insert it....

I parted out my G6-3xx long ago, but I bugged
them about two years ago with my AMD Select 900 and they were able to help.
It's worth a shot if he can't find it elsewhere.
