    Arguements with friends

Do you guys ever get in arguements with your ignorant friends about lifting? We were watching UFC Saturday night and we started talking about lifting. I told them that for legs all I do is 5 sets of squats and maybe some calf work. I occassionally do hamstring work too. My leg routine mainly consists of squats. They said I'm stupid and I dont' know shit about lifting. They seem to think you need to hit every single angle of every muscle. Its ridiculous. Like 20 sets for legs you know. I try to explain overtraining to them adn they just dont' get it. THey dont' think 20 sets is overtraining. I said for chest all I do is 4 sets of bench or flat dumbbell. I occassionally change it up with incline press and other things but mostly I do 6 sets for chest. They laughed at me. THey said what about decline, and cable crossovers. I tryed to explain that you cannot isolate the parts of the pec. They just kept saying I have a lot to learn and I should lift with them. To me lifting is like 20% of my health. I mainly am concerned about my diet. BTW I am bulking. I started at 153 and I am now 182. Took me about 6 months. I have been stuck between 180-185 forever now. I just need to start eating more. They think I just need to lift more. Ya Ok... Ok I'm done venting.

I know, thats another thing. My buddy, one of the guys I was argueing with, gave me this training DVD. "Mission of Massvie Proportions" starring, Cutler, Cormier, Dexter Jackson. He kept referrancing this DVD. People just don't get that these guys are walking science projects with all sorts of drugs running through them.

Same here man....I was stuck at 185 for probably almost 3-4 months. I realized that to get past it I had to stuff myself untill I felt full almost all hours.

I don't know that I would recommend that. While the abdominal muscles are not particularly receptive to hypertrophy, I wouldn't be training them for it.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

My friends all have played College sports and exercised for over 20 years, all have done personal training and one played Pro football.....so we never argue about exercise or how to do it.....I value their opinions and usually take their word as gospel.

I hate to do this but 5 sets for legs is a little low, you need to fatigue the muscle, just squads are not going to do that, you need to do hams and at least some extensions with it. but I know what you mean about the chest stuff, I do a lot of chest work but not the standard stuff no, to do all of that as variety on the normal stuff like dumbbell and barbell flat BP is good to keep shocking that muscle, but not as a every workout of the year thing.
Most people are scared to change something, but I say as long as it does not replace something important it's ok.

I am sore for 3-4 days after my leg workout. I'm afriad if I add more exercises I would be overtraining my quads. I do occassionally implement extentions in my routine.

All I ever did for quads was 5 sets of squats then 2 of extensions and my legs grew like weeds......so I think 5 sets of squats can be plenty for some people, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
But you do need to work the hamstrings also......I see guys neglect this more than any muscle.....just throw in 3-4 sets of SLDL's.

foreman beat me to it. Your legs are the largest muscle group on your body.
No, 5 sets is not enough to fully hit them. Yes, you do have to hit them from different angles to fully work them.
Again, as Forman stated, you have to do something for your hams to balance the legs out. Curls and Extensions are isolation moves for the end of the workout to bake your legs.
    Add them in slowly...
I have been missing my leg workouts. (no real excuse..just lazy) But tonight, will either just do squats and call it, or add in something for my hams, then call it. Once they are used to the punishment again, I will do:
Squats / hack squats (hams) / curls and ext. and even get a little wacky and throw in some calves.

Now, I do argue w/ my friend about volume, reps and Range of motion.
Success leaves clues. People who produce outstanding results do specific things to create those results

Nobody cares what you did yesterday or what you are going to do tomorrow. What is important is what you are doing NOW to solve our problem
