    Should I Volunteer for Iraq?

As of next month I will have been in the military for 10 years. I served 5 years in the Marine Corps on Active Duty, 3 years in the Air Force on Active Duty, and 2 years in the Air National Guard.

I have a chance if I want to volunteer to go to Iraq for a 6 month deployment. I'm a cop in the AF, and I'll either be guarding planes or working in a prison (I really don't want the latter). Like I said though it's voluntary (for now).

If I choose to go, I'll have to stop going to school, even though I'm set to finish my Associates Degree next semester. So should I volunteer or not?

And please don't turn this into an "I hate Bush" thread.

If you were single and they paid that bonus, I'd say go for it. . .but you've got a wife and young children and putting them through the worry may not be worth the sacrifice.
You might find a way to finish your associates while there (online or correspondence) but you'd have to weigh how much of a commitment this would take, along with whether you'd be subjected to stop-gap stuff, etc.

There are plenty of College Republicans without families who can volunteer.

    1. The flightline is a secure area
    2. You'd get hazardous duty pay
    3. You'd get family separation pay
    4. All your pay while there is tax free

Pretty good chunck of change for working in a secure area. (But I'm greedy )

It would also count as a short tour overseas so you won't have to worry about getting sent anywhere for a couple of years.

I would go provided the ole stop gap isn't an issue, which it prolly will be. What is another 6 months to wait for your associate's?

Do what you feel is best for you Great Satan.

You oughtta get the AA/AS degree out of the way first, though.

Believe me if I could finish college then go to Iraq I would. My enlistment ends in Dec 2006 and by the time I finish college I'll only have acouple months left. My command won't send me with such a short time on Contract. And, I AM NOT reenlisting.

Maybe this answers your own question? I think I would go.

I would not volunteer. Firts of all I do not believe in this war. If I did believe in it, I would still not volunteer. I think they have enough soldiers. I would probably be a good soldier. I'm strong, lean, fired many guns, I'm a hunter and I listen well. I have become accustomed to many things that I would not have over there. For example, a warm shower every morning, a nice bed to sleep in, my girlfriend. Just a few examples of why I would not volunteer. That makes me sound like an ungrateful citizen but thats how I feel.

Nah, don't feel like an ungrateful citizen. The military is not for everyone. I love it, personally. And I have never thought less of anyone who hasn't chosen to join, it's your right not to join. So don't worry, I'm willing to die for that right for you. BTW, I get nice warm showers here, but unfortunately, my wife couldn't come with in that aspect. The beds, however, aren't the most comfortable, but they are beds instead of cots. Can't have everything I guess.

I think the real question here is, "Do you want your head cut off with a knife?".

Edit: After i heard they were capturing and executing aide workers in Iraq i lost all faith.

I'd say finish your school and then go. One more symester won'r ruin your chances to go overseas.

You can always contact NGB and throw your name in the hat for OIF missions. They are always looking for M.P.'s to augment deploying units and ongoing security missions.
