I'm a cheapskate, so I'd check the Y out and see what they actually have. I have a history with Gold's, so you really don't want my opinion on them. (Think contract disputes similar to T.O.s)
So I've been a member of a local only gym for the past 3 years or so.
I haven't been working out that much since August, because of the Mountain Bike Race Series ...
Next month I'm going to get back into my winter routine, and I was thinking about switching to a different gym closer to where I live (I moved to the other side of town).
I pay like $26/mo now ... no real perks, just weights and cardio machines (sauna, etc, but not health club style).
There really are only 3 choices:
YMCA - never been - not sure if they have enough equipment
Gold's - They never tell me a freakin' price
Premiere - Local health club ($$$$ = pool, bball, etc)
I'm leaning towards golds, just curious if anyone had any suggestions or input ...
TIA

what's closest (convenient) price and atmospere?
I switched from World's to 24 hour fitness. The atmosphere is lacking. Usually I can block it out, but on those days that I am having a hard time getting my 'mind into te game' I can hear that Many Gray crap they play over the speakers..doesn't help much...(Macy Gray / Celine Dione should only be played in elevators and doctor's waiting rooms...not in a gym...at any time...for any reason....)
How about going and trying each one, then make your decision?

Part of the reason I haven't switched is because I'm FINALLY on a month-to-month status, so I can leave whenever ... I hate being locked down ... arghhhh
I'll have to ask a couple chicks I know who go to the Y what they have.
I also like the 24-hr option that I currently have.
There's 3 golds in town. One is 24-hour ... lots of college kids (near campus)
One is right by my house, small, but literally a mile and a half away tops.
The other is on my way to work, about 1/2 way.
So it would be all about convenience.
Did you post about your Gold's experience?
Burner,
I thought about trying them out. I really should just stop twiddling my thumbs and pony up and do it.
I've been riding so much, I haven't been to the gym serious in a few months now ... but I know I'd go more if it weren't so far away.
I didn't really think about atmosphere. That's a subconcious reason why I'd like to change. New mgmt and new people, not really into it as much. Suppose I can get a "feel" for the other places, if it's a big miss, there's no way I'd go there ...

that's why I would try the all. I only live 5 mins. from my gym...
I think atmosphere is imortant. I have gotten used to 24 hour..but still wish I had stayed @ worlds. (I tried to go back, but they want as much as I pay for 24 but don't offer 1/2 of the stuff: hit tub, pool, ball courts) and World's still uses the rickety equipment I was using when I started working there 7 years ago...

The YMCA is cool. My local Y has some nice equipment and there are days when no one is in the weight room. However, as of late, there have been some christians who have been asking me religious questions. Some religious dude: "That sign on the door is such a great quote." Me: "Er, sure.."
The quote reads:
"What a man puts in his mouth does not make him unclean. It is what comes out of a mouth that does..."
Funny, I disagree 100%. There are some fuguly mofo's that put some nasty shit in their mouth and look and act VERY unclean. Whereas I say some unclean things that help me to release stress.

After I closed this account they hit my credit report with this nasty non-payment crap, that shows up when anyone reviews my report. Naturally, I had no idea abou this until about 2 years later, when I was in Alaska. (tough to keep track of those things while in Korea mind you) So needless to say, I am not a big fan of Gold's Gym as even leases for homes can be broken by military orders to another location, even in state. But that's just my experience.
Go online and download Gold's one day pass. Try out one Gold's, take a tour of the other two (get prices on the tour) and see if Gold's worth it. I'm a Gold memeber and so far the only thing bad I can say about it is parking sucks at the location I use (they working on increasing parking).
just get a membership and go!! or dont and stay home! its not a hard decision!
