    Powerlifting Videos / Documentaries

Are there any powerlifting shows, televised events or documentaries that are available for rent or viewing online (preferred)? I need to write a paper on an "alternative sport," one that is not considered mainstream and I wanted to do something bodybuilding related. I basically need to watch a show/program that focuses on this sport and talk about why it isn't covered in mainstream media, who its participants are, sponsors, costs, etc..

    Due tomorrow by the way.

    irongame.com has videos.

I think at elitefts.com under articels there is a dave tate interview and a louie simmons interview both from radio stations.

it is tough to find stuff televised. May want to do something like the ESPN X-Games which would be easier to get info on.

Really smart of you to wait until the day before it is due to ask for material to present.

Hey thanks Patrick. I have been checking out dieselcrew videos and been on Ares trying to download stuff but not much luck with Ares. I was hoping to find something along the lines of video footage of a Powerlifting meet or something.

Nothing on ESPN or ESPN 2 today except some Import Racing show at 12:30. That will be a last resort since I wouldn't even consider street racing a sport. It was definately my bad for waiting till the last minute. I didn't expect another paper to be due this soon after the last one (two weeks ago, and last week was Thanksgiving Break). The paper hasn't been mentioned in lecture nor discussion once yet and the previous ones have. However, I should have checked the syllabus earlier.

World record bencher Gene Rychlak has complained about how broke he was, how his truck was broken down which is what got him to events, how he was taking care of his dad, and was basically making nothing from sponsorships.

There is little to no cash in powerlifting, as a sport. Its obviously then not done for money, so there are no real video exposés like in bodybuilding.

http://www.undergroundstrength.com/ is run by Sebastian Burns of Metal Militia, they put out DVDs from various events that he captures and then later digitizes. Its all set to music, obviously, metal. Each DVD also includes various educational stuff, like how to increase your deadlift using bands, etc etc

Other than that I'm not aware of much in the way of video footage thats really released regularly other than internet 'clips.'

He sells on eBay also, you might be able to get it a little cheaper there.

Hey thanks Mudge! Don't think any place around here would carry those DVDs, but it's nice to know they're out there. Do you know anything about the sponsors who usually put on these things? Are they typically local businesses, supplement companies, health magazines?

PL events can be carried by anyone really, from a gym to a larger event sponsored by several companies. I dont know the ins and outs completely, but Inzer is one of the big companies that really sponsors probably the most benchers, if not lifters as a whole.

One guy admitted he only switched to Inzer because of the sponsorship money which wasn't much, but was basically free shirts, custom fitted of course.

Karin has sponsored some big names, and has designes taylored around some famous form styles, i.e. a "Jeff McVicar cut" double denim shirt. They seem to be the most sought after when the best product is desired, getting as much quality out of a custom product from other outfits doesn't seem to be as likely, nor do Inzer shirts have a reputation for lasting as long. I myself bought a Titan single ply poly, but thats another story. They are like a little Inzer, Karin is a small-er custom outfit.

    http://www.karinsxtremepower.com/catalog.html

So there are events big and small, and different PL organizations with different rules. There are rules for how many judges have to be present to set records, and I believe you have to be in a full power meet to set any world records which means you at least have to take a token squat/dead lift in order to even set a bench record. So rules, events, and how many people show up all vary...

    http://worldpowerliftingcongress.com/upcomingmeets.htm

This place tracks meets but doesn't list them all.

Powerlifting is WAY too small for Sebastians DVDs to be in any outfits, if he felt like it he may have been able to, and may indeed have, struck up a few deals with a few local shops but you are thinking pretty big here to think that they would even be in a Max Muscle shop or Golds Gym counter much less of course a Walmart. He is in the New York area and I'm pretty sure its all mail order, he ships quickly and will respond to email.

This guy is in Underground Strength 6, he looks quite animated before he goes for the lift. Both motivating and hilarious at the same time, he squatted 909 in the middleweights. I used to watch almost every day before I went to the gym, so thats what I'm doing now.

    Jesus. 909.

Are the custom outfits worn to workouts or just when maxing?

Training varies, amongst Metal Militia guys, Westsiders, and so on - but the shirts are a part of most benching routines at least once a week or once every two weeks, it really really depends. Getting the most out of the gear is achieved by using it frequently. The purpose of custom fit goods, is getting the most out of it! The better the fit, the more experience, the better the lift.

Bench shirts are probably used in training more often than squat suits, as a guess, but I'm not sure. Some people train raw until close to the meet for deadlifts for example, Andy Bolton does lots of deadlifting volume through the week and I believe trains mostly raw.

I was using a modified version of Shawn Lattimer's "low volume" Metal Militia routine and its still BRUTAL on the system. MM guys do very high volume training, 20 pressing sets is NOT ABNORMAL and could even be called light.

    http://www.shawnlattimer.com/programs.htm

So there is one place you can look at training a bit. Basically MM guys train bench twice a week, once with shirt and once without. They will use any variety of accessories from boards, to sometimes bands (they dont do bands much last I saw, but things change!), lots of rack lockouts for triceps (that becomes the new weakpoint with the shirts since you are assisted at the bottom) and so on.

I saw Andy Boltons routine around somewhere for deads, let me try to find it.

    Here we go:

    Andy Bolton’s weekly training routine

Monday I start with 10 min on bike, nothing too hard just to warm up. Next I perform some light stretching then proceed with bench press doing 10 sets of 3 to 5 reps using 3 different height boards on chest 2", 4" and 6". Each workout we will use a different board height not all 3 in same workout. The weight I use on the boards are 6" - 300kg 3reps and 317.5(700lbs) 1 rep. On 4" board I have done 280kg and on 2" board 275kg. Training up to the Arnold 2005 PWO I benched 300kg to my chest and my last heavy bench before a show is 2 wks away. I then drop back to 100kg for 8 reps.

Next comes close grip bench, I do 3 sets 5 reps working up to 220kg then proceed onto light shoulder press 2 sets 8 reps 70lb max then light front and side delt’s. My next exercise is heavy vbar pushdowns working up to the full stack plus a

20kg plate added for 6 to 10 reps. Lastly I do ab’s performing 5 sets of 10 reps with a heavy weight added if required. That’s Monday done.

    Tuesday is rest day.

Wednesday is squat night, starting with bike and stretching same as Monday. For squats I do

10 sets of 3 to 8 reps, working up to 410kg before a show. I work mainly on explosive power always squatting with as much explosive power as possible.

After squats I do 1/4 squats to a box these are done every alt wk and are stopped 5 wks out. The weights I use are 455kg(1000lbs) for 3 reps after which I proceed onto deadlift. I do 10 sets of 3 to 5 reps working up to 362.5kg/800lbs for 3 reps, 3 weeks out from a show but always pulling the weight as fast as possible. Next is partial deadlifts pulled from shin height, these are done using straps as the key here is explosive power and not grip. The maximum weight I have done on these is 470kg/1036lbs 3reps and 420kg/922lbs for 10reps. That’s wednesday done.

Friday is only a assistance day again starting with bike and stretching then onto:

Lying leg curls 4 sets 8/10reps

Single leg curls 2 sets 8/10reps

Leg ex 3 sets 12/20 reps

Leg press max weightt 600kg 20 reps

Seated calf raises 2 sets 20 reps

Barbell shrugs 4 sets 10/12 reps max weightt used 410kg/900lbs

Hammer rows single arm 3 sets 8/10reps max weightt used 200kg

    Vbar pulldowns 3 sets 8/10reps

Dumbbell concentration curl 3 sets 12 done for pump only

Dumbbell hammer curls 3 sets 10reps max weightt done 130lb

Abs floor crunches 4 sets 10/12reps

That’s my weekly workout after a big show. My weights do drop then I build them up again towards a show.

My daily supplement programme is as follows.

Upon waking I take 20g Pro glutamine or Pro G.F pre competition.

Mid morning - Pro Mass made with milk.

Lunch - meal and serving of Pro Peptide.

Mid afternoon - meal and serving of Pro Mass made with milk.

Pre-workout Pro Peptide or Pro G.F. pre competition.

    During workout - Pro Napalm.

    Post workout - Pro Recover.

    Evening - meal.

    Before bed - Pro Peptide.

Also each morning and evening I take Pro Vital.

    My meals consist of:

Chicken, steak, eggs, lots of milk, potatoes, rice, bread, beans, cheese, cerial with sugar (ha ha)

Also I do like chocolates, lots of chocolates (ha ha) not good though. I like eating but try to keep to a good diet most of the time.

Yeah, I noticed a lot of bodybuilders have "Road to (year) (Olympia or Arnold)" DVDs out. I found a couple on Ares, including one about Arnold (1980?). The Arnold videos are the best ones.
