I'm a big fan of the new computer associates EZ Antivirus - it's not nearly the PIG that Norton is! We've been using it at work for a while now with no issues.

    Yeah, Norton sucks.

Sucks ass at actually deleting and finding viruses, I had to delete a lot of stuff by hand on multiple computers. Avast! also auto-updates.

Norton seems to be a little thick....

McAffee not so friendly, but fine...

I'm using the "System Mechanic 6" utility on my home PC right now
and like it... It has all kinds of neat features like automating
scans and defrags and has a friendly GUI

If you're worried about getting a zoo virus variant, the only app that has you covered is Sophos. If you don't give a fuck, then buy "insert popular brand name here." I like trend micro.

Starting with a clean slate, cleanly installed OS, fully updated, firewall turned on... I'd say you might be covered with MS Anti-Spyware, or Spybot S & D with tea timer turned on and maybe Spyware Blaster, all with updated defs, if you want freeware.

If you're going to pay for it (although I could hook you up) SpySweeper is the best though, although its hungry for resources.

Ditto, the MS is very good. I had some stuff creep past my TeaTimer though, so I dont give it as much faith. Honestly though one spyware program is not enough anyway, I use several.

I also use Firefox 99% of the time.

That's interesting, I think at this point Spyware is more of a threat than a virus would be for me.
I was once infected with winfixer just by entering a site.

I agree with several also, but not if you start with a clean slate. I also agree with Firefox.

If you start to get spyware, then hyjackthis is a great app to get rid of those annoying variants that are hidden in the registry.

I agree completely, I saw much more in the way of spyware problems towards my last days as a sys admin. One girl would reach close to 500 detectable pieces about every 6 weeks, she would not listen to me tell her, or constantly email EVERYONE at the site, do not download free games and screensavers etc. She was, "one of those." It gets to the point where the machine will reboot, crash, slow down, email wont work, you name it - all because of spyware, not viruses.

That is also in my arsenal, however many still like to come back. Spyware, sucks ass.

Personally I'm quite fond of Mcafee. I've never had any issues with it at all. We even use it at work and without issue.

You know I don't use any anti-virus or spyware removal/finder software I just know where the shit comes from and steer clear of it.
