    The Marines

I know the decision is really up to me and me alone, but I'd like the opinions of you guys who are either are in the marines or have some good info (personal experience) on them...(ya I know they have a website and I already checked it out).

Been thinking a lot about joining them lately....not to sure what I want to do with my life....step brother has been in it for 20 yrs, but don't talk to him much. I plan on definitely finishing my colleague career first before I join up, which should be next fall if all goes well.

So..what do you guys think? I know my father won't mind, but I think my mother may die if I told her I was even interested...

Maybe I will know better what I want to do with my life by next fall, but if not I will definitely consider joining.

Well, I don't want to die lol. If I joined after college, then I would be able to go into a specialized field and learn it, which would take time. They usually send soldiers with expertise in nothing first....I assume...

Is that what they told you? Unless getting shot at and shooting back are specialized fields, I would be 100% sure you won't be going over to you-know-where.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. If someone gets their jollies off fighting for this country, hats off to them. I would just hate to see someone go in as a computer tech only to learn they will be teching computers in Iraq in a war zone when they could easily work for the Geek Squad at Best Buy and only get shot at on a semi-daily basis.

Listen, you're exposure to danger in the Marine Corps is relative to the MOS you choose. You're in college so I'm assuming you plan on going in as an officer?

If you go in as a Branch Infantry Officer I can assure you that you will see combat. If you go in a specialty field then your odds of getting shot at change.

Now, set all that aside for now and stop and think about what YOU want to do. Are you wanting to serve out of some deep-seeded patriotic motivation? Are you looking for a means to achieve your higher education goals?

Are you dead-set on the marines? Would you consider the Army, Navy or Airforce? Different branches have different options and career paths available for you. Consider these options wisely.

Over-all you're looking at a good decision. The "nay-sayers" will criticize you and call you otherwise but pay them no nevermind.

This may sound pretty damn dumb, but haven't you guys always wanted to do something ''important'' with your life? I know, doctors, officers, etc are all important and everything and would be a much safer alternative, but I've always seen the military as a place to accomplish this....maybe I've just been sucked in by govt. propaganda to serve or maybe not, but I know I'll never be a doc and I know I don't want to be some cop giving tickets to people for speeding I want something more important and meaningful.

I've considered other possibilities such as the Airforce, but my eyesight isn't the best, so I think that is out of the question.

Ok "Air Force" doesn't necessarily mean "Pilot". There are hundreds of options available to you here.

Now I know exactly what you mean about "wanting to do something important" Don't sell yourself short. There are endless possibilities here.

Example: If you graduate college and go in as an officer you can (based upon your GPA and other variables) choose the officer branch you wish to pursue. Say you want to be a dentist? Well the military will pay for your medical school and provide you with the proper environment to pursue that career. Typically, this type of commision requires a 2 for 1 commitment: i.e. 2 years service for every 1 year of school) In adition, specialized (medical) fields pay HUGE bonuses for retention plus several other perks.

You wanna be a Doctor? Pretty much the same thing. Lawyers get specialized deals as well.

Bottom line is you are in an ideal position to begin planning for this. Start talking to ome military career counselors (you school should have a rep). Get your facts straight about what options are available to you before you rush in and make a decision.

No. Not at all. For example... If you already have your 4-year degree, Dental School is 4 years. That will leave you with an 8 year obligation in the military. Now... if you factor in the fact that you'll be saving about 160k (or more) in Student Loans this isn't all that bad a deal.

Edit: You will find that many officers in specialized fields are in for the full 20 years so they can reap the full benifits of retirement and still pursue a full-time career in the civillian world when they comlpete thier military service.

    Ok, Listen to the Devildog.

I was in the Corps . I enlisted right out of highschool Spent most of my time stateside until the war broke out and then I was on the first boat to the middle east. I was an avionics Tech, spent most of my time trouble shooting and repairing search Radar, IFF, Tacan, and IRCM systems in helo's. The MOS you choose has a lot to do with the type of experience you have in the corps. I had it easy compared to the typical grunt. I worked in an airconditioned unit, slept in a bed, or a cot every night and was relativley safe when I went to sleep at night. However not everyone is going to qualify for the MOS I had. SO get tested see what you qualify for and make your choice wisely. Also investigate any monitary incentives that might be available.

As far as flying is concerned. THe Marine Corps has the highest ration of pilots in teh military period. So if you want to fly, get your eyes fixed (Lasix) and join the Corps!
