That would have been rather difficult, since his wife pretty much ran the show in the White House. Ronnie was a movie actor turned politician - his rare toughguy appearances on the screen sounded good in real life, but were much like most Republican displays of swagger - lots of talk and little substance. But he was determined to declare ketchup a vegetable.

Still, even he must be spinning in his grave watching what the GOP has become - a bunch of fearmongering, namecalling, lazy citizens with a middle-school bully's mentality who depend more on superstition than science, who celebrate paranoia above reason and who view the possession of an independent thought as evidence of treason against the glorious State. They have spent every dollar in the treasury and worked desperately to bankrupt our children and grandchildren - all in the name of protecting the homeland . . .and then trot out a grade school-level design of a color-coded warning system and tell people to buy duct tape and saran wrap to cover up their homes against the next terror assault.

Everything is a "war" - they are in a perpetual state of conflict no matter what the national cost. As they declare the nation at war with terrorism, they also declare war on their own country, choosing to promote division by looking for the most vulnerable people to "blame" for their own failures. Then they hide behind the most unscrupulous band of televangelist descendants from barnyard revivals to suddenly rediscover the Bible - or at least only those verses they can use to cast spells on other citizens they don't like. They've proposed more constitutional amendments in five years than any other party in 200 years - most of them to give more power and money to the American ayatolluhs who form the financial backbone of the party with their constant blue-haired appeals for salvation through the donation of senior citizen's retirement checks.

They can't organize a simple relief effort for a major national disaster in our own country until 100 other countries have already either mobilized assistance or made generous offers, spending the first three days after a hurricane whining that no one ever "helps" us and the President was busy eating cake. When that doesn't work, they declare the disaster too big to tackle without large-scale organization, then blame the state and local governments for not handling it all for them. They attack the governor in one state because she's a Democrat, yet stroke the ego of the Republican governor in another state who didn't do anything more to help his own people. In the end, Republicans declared that tens of thousands of citizens who couldn't walk 200 miles out of the hurricane's path in time "deserved" what they got. . .and then trot out their television preachers to declare that God tossed the hurricane at America because of the sinful gays.

Of course they whine that any bad news reported in the media is the cause of the 'liberals" - because "conservatives" are the only ones who understand objective reporting, and they can point to a scalawag Australian publisher's empire and a lunatic religious cult's newspaper as their model for responsible media. When they turn on the radio or cable television news, they can show the country that drug-popping non-journalists who interrupt those they interview, hang up on their callers, and drown out any other guests provide all the information anyone in the nation needs to know.

The Party is incapable of selling the country real reform for health care or social security because the President isn't able to speak before anyone without a captive, appointed audience of Party faithful to cheer every stutter and half-sentence that might slip out between his earpiece dictation and the words escaping out of his phony Texas accented lips. They talk a lot about ridding the nation of the welfare state, and then hire so many cronies and engage in so many corrupt lobbying snafus that there is no better welfare-to-work pathway than being an envelope stuffer during a Republican political campaign. Our Supreme Court justices have to be prescreened and selected by the combination of the American ayatolluhs and the Moonie cult leaders, whose influence also demands that we inject creationism in our schools and recruit for the unofficial government religions which are selected for handouts from the taxpayers without requiring them to meet federal employment laws.

Then their biggest card is the illusion of being the party of morality, which translates into a "don't ask, don't tell" policy which governs the many slimy politicians and religious leaders who continue to be caught up in pedophile scandals, illicit sexual encounters, solicitation of police officers for oral sex at gay resorts, and who try to cover up scores of visits by a fake military-turned gay male prostitute-turned fake reporter who managed to gain regular entry into the White House press corps and receptions. If this isn't bad enough, they trot out such luminary Party supporters as Neil Horsley, who gleefully recounts his recollections of a first girlfriend being a mule on the family farm, or the likes of Dr. Frist, Senate Majority Leader who can diagnose a brain-dead woman's potential for a miraculous recovery via a simple videotape. That morality, of course, involves demanding the government enforce the idea of the sanctity of marriage, while they solicit Congress, the President and a dozen courts in an attempt to destroy a marriage they didn't like and refuse to pass legislation that would limit or punish their own voyeuristic behaviors.

They push through tax cuts in an effort to stimulate the economy, and the population uses the savings to give back to their state and local governments in increased taxes for utilities, gasoline and service charges, come up with torture schemes and then pretend they didn't do it, spy on the Quakers and some gay student group because they could potentially become "terrorists" and then ignore Ann Coulter's "joke" about poisoning a Supreme Court member or Pat Robertson's calls for assassination or dropping a nuke on the State Department.

Then they wrap themselves all up in one of those American flags that are now made in China and declare that everyone else in the world must "hate America" if they don't celebrate their accomplishments.

They sure enough helped God bless America - yeah, right.
