    Should I buy this car?

    1998 Crown Victoria Polic Pkg

My friend bought this a couple months back. It's a '98. It used to be a Police car so it has the police pkg. Then it was a taxi. The engine has approximately 100,00 miles on it. The tranny however has 300000. I test drove it real quick last night and it drives nice. I didn't hear any noises. The car handles great and breaks good. Body is in good shape. It's going to need a paint job down the line. I was searching the net and came across a tranny for it for $575 including shipping that only has 45K on it.

He is asking $1500. IDK about prices but it is below blue book. What is your guy's take on it?

    Thanks.

    -John

    ?

I personally wouldn't buy a car that was a Police vehicle or a Taxi, much less both. But it's your call. $1500 isn't too bad for a car that drives.

They are pretty solid cars. 100,000 on the engine is nothing and the price seems pretty good.

IDK rebuilt engine. 300K on the tranny. Seems pretty used and abused to me. I would give him 1000$ at most.

The engine wasn't rebuilt it was replaced. And I don't have a car and this would be my first car so I figure I could learn how to work on cars with it. Replacing the tranny would be fun. My dad used to be a master mechanic a long long time ago. Neone else?

There are still alot of parts on the car that are 300K miles old. I just think 1500$ is a little to much. I know its your friend but its a car and a lot of money. 1000$ sounds right to me.

you can buy this. Buy Imo you'd be better off buying a 93-00 Honda civic with a salvage title, if you can find one with some minor body damage, prices are usually around that range. It will last you much longer then the crown vic and save you some gas money.

Where do you live? If you live in the a big city like NYC, Chicago or LA you can bet it took alot of abuse. These cars are used 24/7 with no care.

The only thing I find attractive about this car though is the police package, it's comes with a better suspension and I believe the engine is slightly tweaked for a higher output. The radiator hoses withstand higher temperatures but now you can get those special blue hoses anywhere.
    I also loves a V8 and for only $l500.00
I prefer a used American car in good condition over a import, the parts are cheaper and they are easier to work with.

The car MAY last you that long but your $$$ won't. You'll spend $1500 for the car and $15,000 on gasoline. (That's only a mild exaggeration.) Also, having been both a police car and a taxi means that poor beast has been beat to death it's entire life. Don't walk away from this car, RUN!

You can get much more reliable and economic cars for just about the same initial investment. (And NO, they don't have to be Japanese. There are very good American cars to be had at good prices.) Even if you have to spend a few extra bucks to buy a decent car, it'll pay off in the long run on gas and repairs.

maybe, but they still suck, they are not built to last and they sure the hell don't hold their value.

I am all for supporting American business, but the fact is Ford, Chevy, GM and Dodge build shit.

if they can start building a quality product like Toyota I will buy American again.

I'm not to keen on the imports. Maybe I'll just wait til I get my taxes back and save up a little more dough and buy a car for like $3k. I've found a couple of nice neons for around that price.

    Because it is true.

I wouldn't buy the car, but it would not be because it is an American car. It would be because cab drivers and the po-po are hard on their vehicles. That tranny may feel fine now, but I imagine it was, at one time, hammerd on. 1500 is far too much for an ex-police car. You can get one for less than that at auction. I wouldn't pay more than 1000 for it, and prolly would make my limit $800 if it was immaculate.

BTW, I bought a car that drove nicely when I tested it. Then I got it hoome and the tranny shit the bed in 2 months. Mechanics can jerry-rig anything to work for a short period of time.

I say get a toyota, they last forever.

    Don't buy a Neon.

I know there is a great deal of patriotism involved with buying an American car. How patriotic are you going to be when you are pushing that piece of shit down the road?

I had a 83 Crown Victoria from the age of 15 to 18, and I loved that car. Those things are fucking tanks. Mine had 180,000 miles on it and showed no signs of slowing down. They are some gas using mofos, but are great fun when you want to run over some shit.
