Use vBulletin from the start, it is the best script available and it is only $160 for an owned license.
If you think it is going to get big be prepared for the costs, it will not take long before you will have to move to a dedicated server.
Have a front end to the forum, a website with content, articles, etc.
Be prepared for a lot of work if you plan to make it successful.
That is all of the free advice I will give you.
