from what I hear they are a joke!
Lets get some opinions on this.
Has anyone done an online degree?
Would you hire someone that has an online degree? Even though it doesn't say it on the diploma lets say in an interview you asked about their college and they told you it was an online degree.
I want to go back to school for my masters. I have to admit, as much as I love the idea of going to school and studying. It is a lot of money and well, a lot of time in class. time that i don't have. I mean, if I could work full time and still get my degree by studying on my own time and doing online lectures is that such a bad thing? It isn't like I need to have a professor hounding over me for essays. When it comes to studying my subject I waste no time and happily put in the time and effort needed to better myself.
Also, if I can crank out a masters for more then half the money (since you don't use the university it comes out being really cheap!) and half the time (since i wont have to go to all the classes) I could be on my way to maybe going and attending school for my doctorate (since I would have saved up more money working and paying for the less expensive online masters degree).
I am a bit skeptical about these sort of things. Obviously if I have to I would gladly go back to school and put in the work (and take out loans and loans to pay for it. *sigh*).
So, what does everyone think? Any feedback on this route from those who have walked it before or others?

It depends on the school. There are some legitimate ones out there, as well as, some real crappy ones. If you are looking at taking classes, but don't want to actually attend in person, most colleges and universities have distance learning programs. (Even the bigger schools) Basically, they offer classes via internet. Not sure if you knew about them, but I thought it was appropriate for the discussion.

Can't say that I have a degree from an online university. I do have a relative that got his Ed.S (educational specialist degree) from the University of Phoenix online and the school system he works for gave him the money he was entitled for the degree. They told him that as long as it was accredited that they would accept it as far as masters, doctorates and specialist degrees went.

Distance education is legit, but usually they can only be applied to a certain percentage of your required credits to graduate. I'm allowed up to 12 hours of online/distance education credits, but they can not be core classes. I can't use them for chemistry or physics, but did do it for a psychology and english class and it's so much more convenient, because you get 1 year to finish the course at your pace and when I took the exams, the proctor that was supposed to watch me left to get lunch then came back. You can also actually pay $50 per course to get a 3 month extension (for USC anyways, i'm not sure how it works at other universities). They're great if you're trying to graduate early, or can't fit class into your schedule. My online class did meet on the internet once a week, but that was the only requirement, besides taking the test at a USC approved location.

P,
I think as long as the school actually has physical classes as well you are good to go. Like UTEP, CUP, and tehre are others. Another thing you need to look for is whether the University is a member of one of the governing bodies of colleges and universities (I think there are 4, and broken up geographically).
My buddy we were discussing actually prefers online classes. He finds it a more efficient use of time to have the assignment and the ability to go over the lecture at the same time rather than take down notes that may be irrelevant. ME personally, I can't sit for a 2-3 hour lecture which is typical of grad school, so being able to watch it in parts over a longer period would benefit me greater than having to show up at class. Think of how much time you spend looking up stuff here and on the web. For the most part, I surf for 30 minutes to an hour and then do some more later.
One thing you should also be awrae of is whether the Uni you get your degree from puts that it was obtained online. I know UTEP and CUP do nor. It shouldn't be a big deal, but someone may be a bitch about it.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

This degree is recognized and he did it all online.

But it was done on his own schedule.
He's never been the the UK Redding campus and did it from Asia.
It carries full weight.
Online Degrees
Online Degrees can carry full weight depending upon the University and the field of study.
I wouldn't take a doctor seriously with one - and one wouldn't be allowed. Same with a truck driver.
But for many fields today, online degree are becoming more comon.
1. Many adults that are getting their first and/or second BAs, and Master's degrees work full-time.
2. Many people cannot even commute to a campus because of location (commute, too far away, etc.).
Depends on the Uni., and it depends on the program.
Harvard has online degree programs......

It's all about accreditation. Make sure all of your credits will transfer to whereever you may plan to get your doctorate.

I actually know a couple of people now, that got their Master's online and they have the official degree and the transcipts from the university, and they enhanced their careers and job opportunities because of it.
