I was born on that damned island (and damned it presently is) but I'm not presently living there (and hopefully never again!).

How the hell does one get electricity from the rain may I ask?

Rain is water and water is 2 parts hydrogen 1 part oxygen so you elctrically seperate them, store the hydrogen for fuel and there you go. But it takes energy to make energy no matter what. The best we've come by so far in my opinion is the solar hot water panel followed by the solar electric panel. Solar electric panels continue making electricity for 15 to 25+ years after they've caught up to the energy needed to produce, distibute them.

Think about alll the energy that goes into exploring for oil, drilling for oil, hauling oil, refining oil, cleaning up spills from oil, other enviromental issues such as the number of lung diseases smog has or will cause and it's burden on the healthcare systems. It's the worst source we've ever become addicted to.
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

I think they actually cost more per watt than silicon PV modules.

Until we get a phone call asking us how many we want to buy none of these "new technologies" do us any good except get more phone calls about the "new latest and greatest solar panel the size of a nickel that can power a refrigerator" and I sit there holding back a laugh because nothing that size could power anything unless it's anti-matter and we have still yet to find out how to harness even the tip of a safety pin worth of that.
