Question:Can one safely run WIndows 2000 on broadband internet.

I have an older PC (Dec1999 P3 very little memory) that I'd like to get onto the internet with wireless. Is using Windows 2000 to connect to the high speed internet a feasible option? I ask as Windows 2000 is no longer being updated by Sir Gates....... SO is 2000 possibly more prone to being wrecked by viruses?

I'd be using an anti virus on it of course (avast-which is free and better than that Norton shit).........

as long as you are using anti-virus and a firewall you will be fine with Win2K (w/ SP4).

SP4? OK! Thanks! I'd heard from someone that (being no longer updated) Windows 2000 was a liability on broadband!

Its safer and more stable. Im using 2000 on a p2/350 laptop. Run a firewall, i dont bother with anti virus, havent had a virus ever on my 2000 box. I'd be using NT if it supported usb. Xp is shit.

Can anyone recommend a decent free firewall? (Preferably not the latest zone-alarm) ?

I'm amazed you 've never had a virus.

Yea XP is shit. I got it with my laptop so I'm using it now.

I've tried putting xp on to the old pc but it wont boot from the cd (laptop boots from the same cd- I don't know what the hell is going on there)..SO 2000 is presently on the old PC, I'll bung in the wireless card tommorrow and see what happens!!!!

stay off the popup porno sites, and be cautions of what you download and no virii. I use an online scanner occasionally and its never found anything. This installs about a year old.

Xp systems though...i fix a couple a month friends/co workers /family and they're just full of shit.

Spyware, thats another story..i use adaware, but it doesnt find much besides tracking cookies.

True Story, I'm going to run slackware and suse for now on.

We'll except for my 2k3 win enterprise server. That's for testing purposes only though. Oh, and XP on my notebook.

I don't go to porn sites.

I use Spybot and adaware, avast anti virus, and a 2003 version of Zone Alarm. (The firewall I 'm looking to change fast!) I've tried installing linux ubunto onto the old pc--- but linux is difficult and I just don't understand what the fuck to do.

Outpost Firewall is good, that's what I have on my system and it works great. NOD32 is a real good antivirus as well. Both of which are very easily obtainable via torrentspy.com

Turn a junker pc into a dedicated linux firewall using Monmothas Firewall Script.

I have had 2000 crash on me time after time after time. When I worked in the computer lab at the college a few years ago, I had to fix the computers that ran 2000 almost every day.
Now, my XP systems have run about 95% effectivly. XP is the most stable OS that microsoft has released since Dos 5.0. XP is good, but my linux system has never crashed, ever.

Bullshit. I spent 7 years repairing systems, 2 of that after xp was released, and our little ass p75 nt domain server had 2 years up time and was was turned off once to replace a cpu fan. Xp is fucking garbage. I cant count the number of systems that just decided to corrupt the fat for no reason.

Ive fixed easily 3000 systems and I'd take my os's from dos5>6.22>nt>2000>xp>98se>95>me

    Oh command.com i miss you.

Installed the wireless card into that PC. Put in the encryption(?) password and it wouldnt work. It only tries to find channels 10-15. Went with laptop to the website which controls the d-link box and changed channel from 6 to 10. The PC worked! and the laptop stopped working. But suprise suprise , the laptop reset itself and now works. The PC appears to be receiving now but neither Mozilla or IE are finding anything. So I've turned the bloody PC off and I'm sitting on my bed with my laptop.Bliss (?)

Reset everything including the cable/dsl/dial-up? modem, D-link router? and the PC/Laptops then start them up in that order Modem first, router second and pc/laptop last. Allow 5 minutes to pass between each start-up.
