Ex-Van Halen singer struggling on radio

Source

Do they expect him to be better than Howard Stern?
Not fair I think but if there is a anybody or anyone that may be Opie and Andy.

Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- David Lee Roth says he won't jump from his gig as a morning radio host.
Roth, who replaced shock jock Howard Stern on seven stations in January, has struggled in making the move from rock star to radio host. But during his Friday show, the former Van Halen frontman vowed to stick with it - although he acknowledged that problems continue.
"I'm going to give it a try," Roth told his audience. "I've invested too much in this show not to."
Roth's show underwent some drastic changes last week, with the removal of his three on-air sidekicks and the ditching of background music. According to Roth, he received four letters in five days from CBS Radio officials demanding "extensive changes" in his four-hour show.

The rocker complained that CBS executives had failed to offer him enough support when the show first debuted.
"I didn't know what I was doing," Roth said. "I asked for rehearsal, and they didn't give it to me."
Failure to comply meant "termination or disciplinary action," said Roth, whose show airs in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Dallas and West Palm Beach, Fla.

Nobody can be Howard Stern. He is by far the best radio personalility out there. I won't rave about him, but I will say that I just ordered another serius receiver for my van. I love it, it is fucking great. best thing i've ever bought.

is Howard Stern even doing that well on Sirius? It seems like they aren't really doing that great either......from what people tell me, they say that Stern is pretty bland since the whole point of the old show was to be irreverant and piss people off and now that there are no rules, there are no people to piss off so the excitement is a little lost.

CBS wants the 18-35 male demographic, but won't allow any of the stuff that demographic wants to hear over the radio. They got rid of his buddies and the background music, but that had nothing to do with the shitiness of the show, the show just sucks. It would be like cutting off your arm because you have athlete's foot. It seems radio's theory is that people have to tune into something, but all I tune into now in the am is my CD player in the car or MP3 player on the train.

The Kidd Chris show is on here in Philly, he used to do alot of stuff with stern, most of the Arnold phone calls and stuff. They were doing well during the 3-7pm slot but now the show is getting brutally chopped up. Some of the stuff they did that wasn't even that bad can't be played any more so they are waiting out their contract to go over to Stern, supposedly. They are hilarious, but as they do stuff, the station takes away their right to do it over the radio. That must suck.

I don't see stern doing well over there, half the show was him fighting with the program director and that doesn't happen any more as P-funk said. Some of his greatest shows on regular radio happened in the last 2 years. Doesn't matter to me, though, I would never by a satellite radio anyway, I can listen to whatever I want whenever I want for free, why would I pay for it?

Thats me, I listen to AM 90% of the time. the funny thing is I hate Sean Hannity, Bill Oreilly. and Lora Ingram with a passion. But I would rather listen to semi-intelligent people talk about political views that I don't agree with then listen to retardes making dick and fart jokes.
It isn;t all bad on AM thou, Neil Borts is cool.

I listen to Howards show everyday. I also listen to O&A's show on XM. They are both excellent shows. Howard is doing great shows on Sirius. He just had Dice on the other day. Great interview. O&A rip on Howard a lot. I think their show is great as well. Howard is a little better. I agree that they should have took Howards morning slot on testical radio. They are contracted with XM. I think they need to team up. XM and Sirius may merge someday.

Hell no the roasts he is doing lately are AWESOME. Some people may think it sucks but who listened to it to get angry in the first place? People that dont like the show and who are going to say it sucks.

The show feels more natural now that Arty can say motherfucker and so on, the sound bytes are pretty funny as well.

I wont die if I dont hear the show much during the day traveling, but I dig it, its better than it was before IMO. Plus I think Bubba is ok as well, the new guy Ferrel I haven't heard much of but he sounds like an ok guy with an overly annoying voice.

I was very surprised at the Dice interview, it was great and I never liked him much. Now I can appreciate him better.

That is about 5% at most of Howards show, on FM radio there was more of it probably because they couldn't do much else. They got fined for even having the sound of shit hitting the pot. FUCK THE FCC.

Thats the thing, if you dont experience it all you can do is sit on the sidelines and guess. Sitting around thinking about Karate fights doesn't make someone a Karate expert.

Even my boss who is in his 40s and very polite, said Howard was a great interviewer and was a loyal listener. Lots of us listen who dont do "dick and fart jokes" and I for one have never been inside of a strip club.

That's what I'm talking about. The show is better now then it's ever been. I can't get enough of it, and it pisses me off when people talk all kinds of shit about Howard. Seriously, if you have any bit of a sense of humour you would like Howards show. People think it's all about sex all the time, but it's not. Howard is actually a very smart guy.

Yeah, definetely. Rawdog is a good one and I love the NFL channel. I like how I can listen to my classic rock without commercials. I can't even remember the last time I listened to regular radio.

I know dude, I made a slight generalization. I have watched Stern on E and I have listened to his show on the radio. It is funny sometimes, but for the most part it reminds me of a typical morning show, but slightly better. I guess it is just preference. I do not get into morning show material anymore, so that is why I don't get into stern. I do believe Stern is insanely talented or he wouldn't have got to where he is.

Like most things I am not 100% gung ho on Howard, there are some things I dont dig that much, but when the show is talk-radio oriented then I dig it as well as the roasts. I would never qualify as a superfan, but I do dig the show especially with Artie, Jackie sucked ass. Sweaty man ass.

Isn't it ironic that even on this thread one pays mind to David Lee Roth and all the attention still goes to Stern.....life imitates art er the forums.

Radio seems like a tough gig.

I miss Stern, and some of the other hosts.

I hope Stern and Sirius do well.

Roth's radio run is over

Opie & Anthony are in

By DAVID HINCKLEY
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

One of the great mismatches of modern New York radio ended in an awkward silence yesterday as David Lee Roth tiptoed away from his final show at WFNY (92.3 FM).
Roth, hired in January for a reported $4 million a year to fill the morning slot vacated when Howard Stern jumped to Sirius Satellite Radio, was terminated less than a week before the winter Arbitron ratings are expected to show that more than three-quarters of Stern's audience didn't stay around for "Roth Radio."

His spot at WFNY and several other major CBS stations will be filled by Opie and Anthony, who currently do a morning show on XM Satellite Radio.

CBS made no official announcement about Opie and Anthony, who were also careful not to confirm any details on their XM show yesterday.

Starting as early as the middle of next week they will reportedly do a 6-9 a.m. simulcast on XM and WFNY, then additional hours only for XM, where the lack of FCC content guidelines permits much more explicit language and graphic content.

"We'll answer all questions on Monday," Opie (Gregg Hughes) said yesterday, but the celebratory tone of the show left little doubt they consider their return to CBS a done deal.

They seemed particularly enthusiastic about the prospect of picking up former Stern listeners. "His era is about over," said Anthony Cumia.

Stern said on the air yesterday that "I don't care who CBS hires. ... [Opie and Anthony] could do really well."

Opie and Anthony were taken off sister CBS station WNEW in 2002 after a notorious stunt in which two of their listeners purportedly had sex in St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Roth confirmed his departure when he went on the air yesterday at 6 a.m., saying he had been informed in a phone call Thursday afternoon.

"This is not an amicable split," said Roth, who had repeatedly accused CBS of not giving him sufficient support and "trying to make me do a different show than the one I was hired for."

Roth talked about his show and his departure for about 15 minutes and then invited listener calls. After he returned from his first commercial break, however, he dropped the subject and took no calls, sticking to music and previously scheduled interviews with TV host Chop and actor Jeff Bridges.

Before that, he warned he will play hardball on a financial settlement, and the last song he played was Pink Floyd's "Hey You," which includes the line, "Don't give in without a fight."

Roth called his 3-1/2 months at WFNY a great learning experience and said he hopes to parlay it into future radio and TV work.

While he referred to his successors as "Opie and Andy," and they have often called his show a disaster, neither side voiced animosity yesterday.

Kidd Chris' show over here in Philly is getting chopped to hell. If they chop up O & A as much as Kidd Chris, the show will suck. They are censoring the dumbest shit and Kidd Chris is much more tame than O & A. I used to like O & A's show before all the censorship, though. Is Sirius doing well with Howard or no?
