    Vacation Dilemma??

Here's the situation: My oldest son graduates this year from High School and as part of his graduation gift I am planning a family vacation (7 total family members - 5 kids) to Cancun Mexico. Keep in mind this has been in the works for sometime now.

Heres the catch: I've been taking care of 2 other kids (8 and 17) for the last 7 months who are related to my wife (wifes cousins kids). I am unable to take them along with us due to the cost of the trip already. So I'm left with either scratching the whole vacation or sending them with their Mom for a 2 weeks while where gone.

Heres the problem: The mom isn't stable right now and have been dealing with relationship and drug problems. The dad is an alcoholic and abusive which is how we got these kids so we definately don't want him in the picture at all.

Here's another problem: The 17 year old I'm taking care of we suspect is gay. My other 3 teenage boys get along with him but they are in no way close and already expressed to me they aren't comfortable around him. The 17 year also is set in his ways and not particularly up on hygiene. So planning a reduced vacation somewhere else involving them would be a tense and uncomfortable vacation

So I'm trying to find the best solution for this, right now I'm leaning toward sending them with their mother but keep having reservations about that.

Being completely cold hearted here. You're already doing the mom a favor by taking the kids in. She can step up to the plate for two weeks. You need to look out for your own kids FIRST. Then, if you can, take care of her kids. Charity begins at HOME.
Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???

Nah, the mother can't step up to the plate. Have you looked to other relatives of the mother? Any chance of grandparents, on either side of your family, or other adult relatives taking the kids for two weeks?

You can't leave them unsupervised, thats for sure. I also thought about church or youth camps, but the timing is doubtful and there is additional cost involved.

Do you have friends or family members on your other side who might pitch in and take the boys? Its a long shot, but you don't have many options.

Tough situation. Very cool that you're treating the family to the trip to Cancun. Additional bad news: the wife's cousin's boys are going to resent the hell out of you taking the family and leaving them behind.

There has to be a win-win angle here. The 17-yr old needs counseling, he's showing overt signs of behavioral issues (read: revolt down the road).

Yeah we do family vacations together every summer last year Hawaii the year before Vegas, San Diego, and 4 day cruise. We use that time to get away and do some family bonding.

You're right about the resentment thing that's one of the reasons I was looking for some other opinions. I'm going to either have to sacrifice our traditional family vacations if we somehow would involve the other 2, downsize were we are going, but the worst is making my own teenagers feel uncomfortable on the trip. Or go ahead and send them to their mom during that time and deal with whatever resentment comes from this.

Believe it or not these kids have 21 aunts and uncles, not one of them wanted them which is why we took them in. This has also cost me having my oldest son move back with his mom and distanced my relationship with him because of this. We receive no financial support from the mom or dad so everything has been tight financially now. I also have to deal with some of the established habits the 17 year has which is frustating as well.

Send them to another relative or someone you trust dearly. I am sure your kids would hate to their vacation ruined by them. Mexico sounds superb ; I wish my parents hooked me up like that when I graduated high school.

Honestly I'm not quite comfortable leaving them at my place while we are gone. Also I was thinking if I could get them with their mom that would take some of the "left out feeling" by them not going. They haven't seen her in 2 years so they both miss her. Just hope she's 100% stable at that time.....she supposedly quit hanging out with Tyrone Biggums.
