The Ask BigDyl computer question thread.

    Dear Abby:

Holding RAM constant, would a 1.6Ghz Sempron or celeron processor of today's quality significantly outperform a 750Mhz Athlon Processor from 6 years ago?----TRANSVESTITE FROM NEW YORK

RAM is one of the great improvements of todays computers versus even a few years ago. A faster hard drive will also noticeably speed up a machine, since slow access to your data will obviously make your machine seem slow.

Slow memory access (RAM or HDD) will make the machine itself seem slow.

Your old ass RAM wont carry over to a new platform anyway. Memory IS the bottleneck in todays computing performance, along with transvestite end users.

Hot ticket on the cheap = overclocked Opteron.

If you could afford it, just get an Athlon 64. You'll be set for another 10 years.

HDD is the bottleneck. If you're really worried about it's performance... then get this:

If you still want to get rid of the bottleneck but said solution above is too expensive, then just get 2 western digital raptor 74 gig HDD's and throw them in a hardware RAID 0.

I know about those goodies, nothing new there. My point was simply carrying over old hardware to a new setup is only fixing speeding up one facet of the machine.

RAM and HDD are where performance lags. Obviously the HDD is slower of the two.

Interestingly enough, once you get these 2 isssues addressed, it then becomes the motherboard databus that becomes the bottleneck--assuming your machine is fairly high end.

Like every other aspect of life, even if one person or department knows whats going on - propogating that information to others is going to take awhile. Communication is slow and thats the breaks.

To be honest, your computer is out-dated. I'd go ahead ( if you have enough money ) and get a new one. Your HardDrive doesn't do much in terms of speed, it's all RAM and Processor. A gig of RAM is pretty much what you're gonna want if you wanna have basically the fastest speed achievable. Harddrive size doesn't matter towards speed, only thing that matters is the RPMs and you want to get at least 7200 or else it'll be slow. Get a good graphics card don't spend under 150 I'd say. You can get pretty good customized deals on cheap computers at

Harddisk drive size does matter towards speed if you're using a pagefile/swapfile and you have little memory.

There are also more determining factors in a hard drives speed than just RPM's, like I/O transfer speed, cache size, and external interface.

Oh and 1 gig of ram isn't meassuring the speed--that's the size, and says nothing about the frequency or cas latency, etc of the ram itself.

My intention was to buy a new computer, I just wanted to know if the processor was significantly better since the RAM was the same between old and new.

No, I don't know everything. For example, I don't know if your apparent retardation is due to nature or nurture.
So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.

DivX as it is used today is a codec, any DVD burner can burn it - provided you have the means to encode with it.

DivX originally was a DVD like product idea created by lawyers, as a means for people to pay for each viewing of the disk via the phone line your player would be plugged into.

Wait for HD DVD or BLU RAY to come down in price.

Then you'll have some nice 50 gig disks you can burn to for a couple bucks a peice.

i meant not all dvd players play divx. mine doesn't so i need to pick one up that does. in the meantime i'm still burning a lot of movies divx because it is so much faster than doing a regular dvd and it's nice to have like my daughters favorite john travolta movies all on one discs or all my sons scooby doo. n the pay per viewing thing i think i remember that . if i burn for other people i just burn a standard dvd rather than wonder if they have divx compatible players. photoshow dvds are cool too. my daughter can take like 20,000 my chemical romance and him pics off here now. i suppose if dale has porn stills...
