Exaggerate and lie. But keep the lies reasonable. Interviewing is a rhetorical game where it's your job to sell yourself.
Also, as a practical tactic, remember one thing about yourself that you hate...and don't make it, "Gee, I really work too hard most of the time." On the other hand, do not admit to an ongoing problem with cocaine.
when i used to go for interveiws i just walked in with the attitude of i couldnt give a shit if i dont get this job,,,,and i was never turned down from an interveiw
I agree, it is also good to have the attitude that you are interviewing them......go in thinking do these people deserve to have me working for them.Originally Posted by aceshigh

Make it a point to interview them. Don't do it superflously either. Do you really want to work for a company that's only been around for a year or two (the likelyhood of them going out of business it very high). Have a list of questions that they need to answer if they want you to work for them.
Also, read up on the company that your interviewing with. You can get a wealth of information from the Internet. It will impress them that you are taking the interview so seriously. Plus, if thier company is subpar, you can just skip the interview and move on to another company.

every interview I've ever had has followed the STAR method. Even employers that do not stictly adhere to this still use some of its questions...Its becoming a standard for human resource dept. in all businesses.

Interviewer: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Applicant: In five years I'll be ruler of all I survey. Master of this domain, and you'll be my...uhhhh...I'll be an assistant manager.

I've always tried to read the interviewer. Sometimes you can get a feel for
them and kind of know the answer they're looking for. I've seen interviewers
that are as nervous as the person being interviewed. If you can make them
feel comfortable with you, I think you already have a foot in the door. Then
the rest is resume and making the interviewer believe in you and your work
habits.

Well you have been very sucessful. It costs a lot to buy a trailer in a shit hole city south of the border. So anybody would be well advised to take your advice.Originally Posted by Tough Old Man

Research the company thoroughly before the interview and ask relevant questions. Nothing shows the employer that you are interested as much as being knowledgeable of the company and the industry.Originally Posted by DOMS

Hmm...this isn't the advice I was expecting. I went for an interview just yesterday, and I used the tried-and-true topolo advice: I rubbed one out. Maybe if I'd put a big sock in my pants she would have hired me...Originally Posted by topolo

I just got back from the interview, It went OK, the position was for a senior financial analyst, I didnt know this going in.
we shot the shit about my experience, education, the company, and currrent trends in the industry. He then told me that he was looking for someone with alot more experience than my self, he knew he wasnt going to hire me but wanted to meet as he is trying to get a position for junior financial analyst into the budget. I said "good, for a minute there I thought you were gonna give me a job and ruin my summer" he laughed. Anyway, once he gets the position approved he's gonna give me a shout! he was genuine and I believe him!
at the point I said "peec, Bitch!" and left!
Make sure you keep your mouth clean for when you have to blow him a couple months down the road.Originally Posted by MyK
