    Does anyone here use Limewire?

Does anyone here use Limewire or other file sharing websites? If so, I have questions.

Have you heard of anyone getting fined for copyright infringement?

yea, but I dont know if they were legit stories, Ive heard more of people who just got "scares", such as emails saying that they will be sued...ect, but no follow through...

The music industry has no reason to go after just one person, itd be a waste of time and money for them, they cant get much money out of one person....They would target big schools if anything...IMO

Yes. I use Kazaa lite as well. They prompted me once saying its illegal to d-load music and such. Nothing ever came of it.

How common is it for users to accidentally download a virus?

That all depends what you are downloading...

If you are wanting a song, and realize one of them is a .exe and not .mp3, then that is a virus

Ive never gotten a virus that my antivirus software didnt catch....

The MPAA or RIAA targets people at random... it seems. A 12 year old girl was prosecuted for downloading a disney song.

To be safe, use a program called PeerGuardian. It blocks unfriendly IP addresses eg mpaa, government etc...

people do get targeted, but Id be surprised if they tried to press any kind of punishment on the kid....

Ive heard people from other messageboards who say they were contacted...ect, but only got a slap on the wrist, but were threatened heavy dollars just to scare them from ever doing it again....

Bazooka - ill try and dig up the article for you because...

The MPAA/RIAA has actively encouraged college students to drop out to pay for the fines of downloading.

I had a client get popped for his daughter's downloading. They fined him $5,000. This was 2 years ago though.

I saw the paperwork and canceled check.

The problem was that she did not close the program when she finished so it stayed on all the time.

You could also download from www.allofmp3.com. It is not free, but it practically is.

I guess I'll just use itunes. I will have to pay a buck per download, but a least it will be legal.

Getting in and getting what you want then leaving isn't so risky, but leaving it running and serving up files for others to DL is. Also if you stick to older music or bootlegs or just porn you'll be o.k but DL'ing the latest hottest greatest pop top music or videos runs a greater risk.

My trick to keep my ratings high is to leave a few amateur porn vids and some free Grateful Dead concert mp3's in my shared folder and I move anything else to another unshared folder.

The irony of filesharing is that whoever catches you must do something illegal to catch you. This person would have to know that you did not have whatever you're downloading (I believe it's legal to download a song from a CD you bought, etc), which is difficult. This person would also have to be using the program and be a host to connect to your computer and hack into your computer to see if you've actually done anything illegal. It's so pathetic that they have police working on things like this when people are getting raped and murdered every day. Why not put these tech people on things like national security instead? It's way too easy to hack into something very important to the government.

I think it's absolutely disgraceful that you would steal files like this, just to meet your sick little porn addiction and music downloading when the CD's are available on the shelf. It's sick, it really is

with that said, how do you make an unshared folder so that people don't keep taking your stuff?

you just cut n paste the files you want to keep private into other files on your pc. just make sure limewire is only set to share files from the shared folder n don't keep like say your adobe photoshop or narnia in there. limewire is a doorway to some reallly good porn. 3 yrs thousands of goodies no one has bugged me. you need to make sure you are running a good virus n spyware program. zone alarm security suite works for me. n oh yea you can get it off limewire.

and how might one do this? Can't you just delete any folder to share files with? My cousin's friend's neighbor who uses this scoundral of a program says that sometimes downloaded files get shared that aren't even in the share folder
