Girl, 11, will be Britain's youngest mother

A girl is to become Britain's youngest mother after becoming pregnant at 11.
The girl smokes 20 cigarettes a day despite being eight months' pregnant. She conceived aged 11 when she lost her virginity to a boy of 15 on a drunken night out with friends.

The 15-year-old has since been charged with rape by police, and is due to appear again at Edinburgh sheriff court on July 10.

Her 34-year-old mother, who gave birth to her youngest child eight months ago, said she was 'proud' of her daughter.

She will be 12 years and 8 months when she has the child next month. Jenny Teague, Britain's youngest mother until now, was a month older when she gave birth in 1997.

How can we best tackle this problem? Tell us in reader comments below

The youngster, who lives near Edinburgh, says looking after her younger brothers has prepared her for motherhood.

But the girl admits she "panics and cries" when babies are unwell and does not feel able to bathe them.

The mother-to-be, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had unprotected sex with the teenage boy, who also cannot be identified, while drunk last August.

    'Excited'

She told the Sun: "I didn't think I'd get pregnant because it was my first time. But I'm really excited and looking forward to being a mum.

"I can't wait to take the baby swimming and out for walks in the pram. I think I'll be able to cope as I've had lots of practice looking after my brothers.

"I know how to feed a baby its bottle and I can change nappies. But I panic and cry if they're sick and I don't like giving them a bath because I'm a bit frightened.

"It's good to know I'll have my mum here to help me if I need her."

Concerned she might be pregnant, the girl visited a GP three times but tests proved negative. She learned the truth after buying a home-testing kit from a supermarket.

After the device displayed two blue lines, indicating she was pregnant, she pleaded with a female relative to break the news to her mother. The girl, who has been suspended from her first year of secondary school for fighting, said: "I was paranoid about what my mum was going to say and just frightened about being pregnant too.

"I knew straight away that I couldn't have an abortion because that's something I don't believe in.

"I was upset and so was my mum, especially as she'd just had my wee brother. We had a big argument and I ended up locking myself in my room and running away to a friend's.

"It was really hard but it's brought me and my mum closer, which is good. I knew my mum would stand by me no matter what, but I told her straight away I was going to keep the baby.

"The social worker suggested I got rid of it but I'd never do that."

    Smoking at nine

The girl, who has shoulder-length dark hair, began smoking at nine and started drinking tonic wine and vodka cocktails at ten. She claimed her cigarette habit was not harming the health of her unborn child.

She said: "I can give up smoking at any time, but I don't find it affects my pregnancy."

The girl, whose parents split up several years ago, said she would like a baby boy - and may call him Leo.

She is currently being educated at a local community centre but knows she must return to school.

She told the Sun: "My mum has said she will look after the baby so I can go to school. I don't know what I want to do with my life when I leave. I used to want to be a nursery nurse, but now I'm not so sure."

    'Proud of my daughter'

Her mum said: "I'm not ashamed of my daughter at all - in fact, I'm proud of her for keeping the baby.

"I know she's worried what other people will say but she can walk out there with her head held high.

"At first I wasn't too happy about becoming a gran. But now I'm used to the idea. I'm really looking forward to having another baby in the house."

The Scottish Conservatives has called for society and families to unite to change attitudes towards sex following the news.

    She just looked soo cute!!!

You gotta love what Britain is turning into these days.

We now have upper, middle and non-working class who just stay on income support and have babies.

You Brits are always behind on the times. We've had those for years.

I've got to give it to you though, you're ahead on the public CCTV and GPS tracking of citizens.

If you'll excuse me, my clock seems to be off. It's reading 15:14, March 15, 2006. It should read 15:14, March 15, 1984.

She said the same thing about your penis. Too bad she's on the metric scale.

True Story, I guess it's way too big to believe, being in meters and all.

Finally we've abonded trackable ID cards. Our obesity rate is catching up rapidly to USA's, and about 3 schools so far have adopted Intelligent Design instead of evolution.

It is a little disconcerting where Britain is heading.

True. The UK used to be a "take no shit" country. Now, they take shit from everybody. The US too.

Adding to the problem with the UK is the EU. Those fuckers are trying everything they can do strip the Brits of self-reliance. Not to mention the fiscal toll that the EU exacts.

I was watching a piece hosted by one of your MPs detailing both. I was pretty convincing.

I prefer the Intelligent Design theory over the Theory of Evolution. It's an out dated term, and while ID may not be the way to go - change is needed IMO. Current research has proved so much of it wrong, but it's also verified a lot of it so we need to revise the idea.

    hmmmm.
If they were proved, why are they still called theories?
    Where is the data?
    Where are the facts?
Please link the rest of us to the research, so I may look it over. We already know that you know everything, but we need to the conclusive data for ourselves to before we decide to implement intelligent design into empirically based science classes.

I never said it was a fact. I never said it wasn't a Theory. I just said I prefer this theory over the theory of evolution. It's called an opinion. And as to being proved I was speaking about the theory of evolution.

I fully agree with you. We should discard internationally recognised fossil and carbon dating evidence of evolution in favour of a book, written 1000s of years ago, by various people, with many conflicting sections.

Remember everyone, there were no cavemen, and just because dinosaurs weren't mentioned ANYWHERE in the bible, doesn't mean they weren't around at the time of Jesus.

You must have the theory of ID completely backwards or something. If you look at it scientifically it has nothing to do with Christianity or the Bible. It doesn't even say that the dinosaurs didn't exsist or cavemen for that matter.

ID is being pushed in school by Creationists/Fundamentalists.

ID is based on the idea that organisms are too complex to have been the result of random chance and natural selection hence, it is a way of putting religion back in the science classroom by suggesting there is a higher being.

I agree about it being pushed by Creationist/Fundamentalists, but how does ID have almost any relationship with Christianity. Infact I'd say the beliefs it MIGHT instill have more to do with Oriental religions or even Native Americans beliefs then Christianity.

Without going into the 'scientific' data of ID or the contradictory ideas of micro and macro evolution, the reason I call it a Christian movement is because who it is being pushed by in schools, ie Christians. Since these schools/states are predominantly Christian, it would be a logical conclusion for the students to draw that the 'higher being' is the Christian god.

Anyways, back on topic... I'm surprised this 11 year old girl had even hit puberty!

Well, then I guess you'd have to blame the the conclusions made by these students based on their former beliefs, current beliefs or the influence made by their parents and friends. I mean if I offered the theory of ID to a Buddhist then they'd think "hmm, further proof of buddha's divnity" etc. It's all in the eye of the beholder as they say. But, as to the girl hitting puberty I believe it. I know a girl who's a friend of mine who hit puberty in 5thgrade which is roughly 9-11. I don't doubt their is plenty more who hit puberty that early.

No you are wrong. The Dalai Lama thinks that ID should be taught as an avenue for exploring our social and spiritual world, but it should not be confused with science. He believes that science should be left alone becuase it helps us delve into the reality which surrounds us but we cannot perceive.
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

In Britain, theoretically, you aren't supposed to have sex til 16. Of course many brake that rule but becoming pregnant at 11 is just shocking.
