How does it work? I mean, the big boys that are always on TV..do they get a bye to the later rounds are do they start like you and 10,000 of your closest friends?

I love playing Holdem' but after getting bluffed out of a queen-high flush by a guy with NOTHING the other night, I have decided that I suck.

Ouch.

Do you have to pay your $25K in, or does the company that ran the tournament you won hook you up?

Sometimes, especially when i drink, I get the logic that I will let them do that and get comfortable, then I will take them big. About -5% of the time does that actually work, but I don't care, by that time I am about 10 beers in.

Pepper, everyone is equal. I'm not sure about this year but with the influx of players they had multiple venues holding the event.

As for being bluffed out of a queen high flush, it's not that hard to do depending on what was on the board and how the other played it. The best poker players can lay down huge hands to fight another day. Sometimes that's how money is made. Any schmuck can push his/her chips into the pot.

If you never lay down the best hand, you are playing too loose.

Just yesterday I had Ah 8h. The flop was 6h 7d 9c. Basically just a straight draw. The turn came a 5h completing my straight and giving me a flush draw.

The other player in the hand bet out $6 (into a $6 pot). I pushed all in for another $200. I figured that if he had the straight, he would call and I would be free rolling for a flush. Well he did have the straight... he showed me his ten as he was throwing it in the muck... a GREAT fold on his part but one most people wouldn't be able to make.

You see $200 into a $12 pot just wasn't worth it to him to risk even though he had the straight (and close to the nuts). There was a possibility I had T8 giving me a higher straight... although a remote possibility.

I read a story once about one pro folding his K on a Ad Qd Jc Ts board because he knew his opponent had the straight also but with the flush draw. This is almost the same scenario I was in. The player did the same thing I did, he pushed all in hoping to catch someone with the nuts and have the chance of busting him out.

Now folding a queen high flush... what was the current pot and what was the bet?

If the pot was $5 and the bet was $40 then yes, this should be an easy lay down no matter what cards your opponent turns out to have.

On the other hand, if the pot was $75 and the bet was $10 or $15... this should become a call.

They're all playing at the Rio - everyone starts equal, pro's and joe's alike - but they're having three separate start days for the Main Event. So if you play Day 1 and make it to the next day, you get two days off before you sit back down at a tournament table.

Since I won the satellite, the company pays all my expenses. Whooo!

Nice, what kind of cut of the prizes do they get? It would be cool to get up there and play with the big boys. I play very loose, so I imagine my day would be short.

This event is getting crazy.... There are so many people winning seats online now. 95% of the crowd will have won there seats from satellites and didn't have to put up more than $50. This means there are going to be a lot of bad players. Strategy for day one should just be to not get involved in too many hands (unless you hit a monster or have little resistance) and let all the horrible players kill each other off.

The company that sends you doesn't get any cut... they already raked their satellite and already made their money.

Nice, I thought they got the rake from the tourney, and a percentage of your winnings. That is a pretty good deal.

That's what i always did when I played with fake money, there were always homos that would go all in on the first hand with a high face card just to get the blinds. Which is also the reason I stopped playing with fake money. I put $100 in like a year ago and am still going at a profit, although the profit has dropped slightly the last month. I just don't really care too much about it, I just like the competition and fucking over of each other.

I'd have to say that's a little off-base. If you start in the smaller satellites, you have to win your way into the bigger ones, and then win there. Sometimes people have to win four or five tournies to get a seat. It takes a lot of skill to do that. They aren't bad players, they just may be inexperienced in live play. But I think anyone who wins a seat (unless it's from a .net qualifier) definitely has to be good.

There will definitely be a big crowd of satellite winners, but last year's winner (Hachem) paid his way with a full $10k. So it's still anyone's game.

Not necessarily... You obviously can't be a total hack if you won all those satellites (unless you got really lucky) but it doesn't mean you are a world class player either.

You have to consider the caliber of players playing these satellites. You can easily have 10 crappy player enter a single table satellite. One will win. Then on the next satellite, you don't know who you are playing against. 8 or 9 of those players could have had an easy first round too. So there may be a couple good players here but a bad beat can eliminate them. Crappy players can easily filter up 2 or 3 levels on luck alone just because of the shear number of bad players entering these.

It is hard for any single crappy player to win a series of satellites. However if 90% of the players that originally entered that satellite were crappy, it isn't that hard for one of those to luck their way into it. It just takes a few bad beats to knock out the good players... and with that many bad players trying to put bad beats on the good players, it can easily happen.

Not only that, many of these satellites are turbo online satellites where the blinds raise every 5 minutes. This helps bad players get furthur too simply because the good players don't have time to wait and be patient. Many of these are basically a scrap shoot.

Also remember many of these players will play 10 of these satellite a week trying to get lucky. With that many banging away at it, there are a lot of chances for some to make it in.

And once a good player either buys in to the main event or wins a satellite, he is taken out of the pool of people trying to win their way in. This means as it gets closer to the event, the competition for the last seats gets lower and lower. After the top 8000 people have already won seats, the competition for the last 1000 seats is a lot easier.

There are plenty of average players that make it into this event.
