I have a HP laptop (about 3 years old) that's been working fine until this morning. I turned it on and it's now stuck on the windows xp blue welcome screen. I've tried booting from the recovery disk with no luck. I even went into the bios to make sure it was set to boot from the cd prior to the hard drive. Still no luck, it just sits on the damn welcome screen.
Any suggestions guys and gals? I really don't care if I lose everything on the hard drive. I would love to get this thing to reboot with the cd and reformat. My knowledge with this stuff is limited but if you guys/gals could give me some ideas I'd appreciate it.
You should be able to boot from "SAFE" or boot to "last known good configuration"
Toy around in your boot windows...
They gave you a Windows Repair disk with that HP????
I'm surprised they didn't pull the old partition and go trick - (bastards)
MM, when you say toy around in your boot windows do you mean the bios screen? It seems my option are press f2 at start up and it goes to the bios screen. I make sure the computer tries to boot from cd first but it doesn't. It goes to that damn welcome screen and just sits there.
Yes, I have the windows restore disk in for it to boot from but it won't. Yes, the cd was working fine last night.
You should have tried last known good config before safe mode... and if neither are working you could try an in place upgrade, which overwrites os files, but leaves everything alone.

And turn the friggin welcome screen off. You can do that "change the way users logon/off" Uncheck use welcome screen. It's gay anyways.

The CD is in but it won't boot from the CD. I have it set to boot that way but it won't. This leads me to believe it may be something more serious with the drive??
I doubt it, check to make sure it's set to boot from cd/dvd/rom/rw/etc first, re-check it and save your changes if it's not. Also make sure the disk is bootable.

Try another disk you know is bootable. For example, an OEM operating system disk, or even the OS disk that comes from HP.

OK guys, I got it to boot from the windows recovery disk.
I'm doing a recovery but it's asking me "which windows installation would you like to log onto?" It only allows me to enter one letter. What the hell do I type here?

Thanks for the help guys. I got it to do a restore and was able to back up a lot of files I needed. It still was acting right so I formatted the drive and started over.
