3mil would set me up nice, rent our current house, buy a new one in the mountains, invest a lot, spend a little, Vegas a little and hopefully get alot more...

My drive to make money controls most of my life. I voted 10 million, but I really couldn't see myself actually relaxing with the money I have ever.

what do you mean by retire?

Would managing investments and speculations on the market be retiring? or do you mean stop trying to earn an income anything?

10 million is enough to make some very safe investments and live off the interest for the rest of you life. If your getting 5%, invest 3% back in annaully to compensate for inflation, then the other $200K is your salary. You never even have to touch the lump sum.

Any less than $5 million I would probably keep doing what Im doing, but just be more comfortable doing it.

Let's assume we are all starting from the same position.

    1. You're all 35
    2. You're completely broke
    3. You have no assets what so ever
    4. You'll never work a job for the rest of your life(this does not include investments that require no input or labor on your part)

Now, given these perimeters how much would you need?

If you said less than 3 million you're crazy. At 3 million you could earn about 150k on your average investments. Yes, I know you could and should invest in mutual funds/stock market and earn a higher % on your investment. This would do fine for the next 10-15 years. After that with inflation the way it is you would then be dipping into your principle. Given a life expectancy of 95 years your initial investment would dry up quickly.

If you're talking about the lottery, good luck with that. About a year ago, my dad and a bunch of guys from his work all threw in some money to buy a few tickets for Mass Millions when the prize was $149 million dollars. They were so close to winning it when they got 4 out of 5 numbers right and they also got the jackpot number. They each ended up getting about 1-2 thousand. Damn, just 1 number away from that much money!
