    Where Should I Move?

With the rising price of houses in Phoenix, I have found myself in a situation where I have about $300,000 in home equity... but I still have a $250,000 mortgage.

I was thinking about moving and want some ideas. I want to get a house for under $450,000. It should be 2500+ square feet with a 3 car garage. I would also like it to be on at least an acre of land where I can keep and ride horses.

I am open to looking into just about anywhere but I don't want cold long winters. Good neighborhoods and nice weather is a must. Also it has to be in an area where I could find a job as a computer programmer... so we are talking just outside of cities that are going to be in the 750,000 - 1.5 million people range.

So far the best candidate I could really find is Texas but I don't really know a lot about Texas (I'm from Canada originally)... Also I am not sure where in Texas would be a good idea. It doesn't have to be Texas though, I am open to any ideas.

    So what do you think?

Northwestern edge of Houston, TX Cypress-Fairbanks. Should have lots of jobs around there, in fact I think Texas Instruments is or was around there. Around Bryan-College Station is nice too. Brenham, TX is a nice area that is ever growing we had a lake home 20 miles outside of there by Summerville, my father worked at the community college.

I love Austin ... some cool shit in Austin, Tx:

We have several places to pursue higher education other than UT.
Other than LA we have the most stable tech related job market.
I can fish in December wearing shorts and a tee-shirt.
    Lakes galore.
Schlitterbahn, Fiesta Tx, and Sea World are all within an hours drive.
    Above average educational system.
    Low crime rate.
Fast response time for emergency services.
Music scene is outstanding. Black Crows are here tonight at The Backyard ... a local laid back venue that serves drinks. SXSW, ACL Music festival. Verizon Wireless Amphitheater,
6th street ... world renown place for a good time.

Single? The women here are sooooo fine. We have a large supply of barflies if that works for ya, but most women here tend to have an education so ya better be able to carry your own intellectually if you wanna be more than a boy-toy. Or not ... just go play. The girls like that too

Married? We have a strong local theater scene, clubs that are fun for couples, and a million spots to get some quality time in away from the kids. There are several fitness centers for you and the little woman to stay healthy at, a nationally recognised hike and bike trail system, a cycling corridor, several disc-golf courses, and some of the most romantic skylines in the country (I like outdoors type females as you can tell).

$200,000 to $450,000 will put you in the middle to upper middle class neighborhoods with all the things you are looking for in your post regarding housing AND a strong return on the investment you're making in your home.

Generally the police are respectful. I have long hair and get pulled over from time to time for speeding but always get treated with respect. Of course I weigh 230 pounds and only stand 6' tall so they are sometimes a little stand-offish if ya know what I mean. But I never get hassled, given the tazer treatment, or feel like I'm in a para-military zone the way
    I did out in LA.

AMD, Intel, Motorola, Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM, Samsung, and TI are all here with the thousands of other smaller companies that flourish by existing in the same city.

Rush hour doesn't last more than an hour and a half mornings and two hours eve's. It takes an hour to get from the northern burbs to the southern burbs in heavy traffic. Most likely you will spend 20 minutes driving to work unless you move to one of the subdivisions close to what ever company you choose to work at ... then ten minutes will be a stretch.

Hope this helps ... good luck in your search for the good life

I live in the San Diego Area, I bought a 3 bedroom house in a "slightly ethnic" area for $360,000 a year ago. Thats right im a 23 year old home owner.

Its pretty nice, Im the only guy who speaks english, but a 2 bedroom house on my street in the same condition just sold for $450,000 so i guess mines worth a little more.

Just to say something thinks about Austin.

Emphasising what he said about Police, they're very polite and generally pretty open. If you aren't swerving you generally won't get pulled over for speeding etc.

They have great clubs, coffee shops, places to relax ( with or without kids.)

Schliterbahn is close ( that's always a great day ), Six Flags ( etc ). San Antonio is only about hour to an hour and a half away ( the River Walk is nice ).

Great town spirit, be prepared to see burnt orange everywhere. Great live shows, plenty of parks, lots of great holiday fesitivities. Lake Travis is always awesome.

Pretty open city to whatever you're into. On the business side BoneCrusher missed Dell as a major company.

    Keep Austin weird. :]
