It depends on the person and their personality

If the waiter/waitress is really nice and seems to care about how everything is and whether or not you are enjoying your food and strike up a few conversations with you, i will generally overtip.

If the waiter/waitress is just plain and strictly takes your order and serves your food with little or no carelessness, i follow the general guideline of 15%.

If the waiter/waitress is a complete asshole, takes too long, in a grouchy mood and so forth, i will undertip a little.

It's all about personality and communication, my friend.

For the most part people are ok, but there are those certain people, such as high school kids and practically all teenagers, who, even if they decide to pay for what they got, they won't leave a tip. But I'll stop complaining now, I get paid well enough

I worked in a restaurant for most of my teenage years, so I know what a shitty job it is.
I will usually tip 20% if the server smiled at least once and didn't fuck anything up.
I even tip 20% at the Chinese buffet.

If you stiff a server, and they recognize you coming back in later on, you will have your food fucked with so hard. Servers are a dime a dozen and so are server jobs, so they won’t think anything of it to risk losing a shitty job to get back at a shitty customer.

My bar tipping strategy is completely different. The bar I use to go to was very popular, and the line to get drinks was horrendous.
I would walk up to the bar tender as soon as I got to the bar and would hand her $20 to $50 depending on how much I was planning on drinking. It seems to work on female bar tenders more so than men. 99% of the time the bartender would ignore people standing directly in front of her to serve me when I was 3 people deep in line.

Usually around 15%.

It's not a restaurant, but I stopped getting pizzas delivered because of two reasons.

1.) Don't feel like tipping.
2.) Have you seen the kind of creeps that deliver pizzas? Atleast where I live. I'm scared what they would do the next time I ordered if I don't give them an awesome tip.

... unless I'm in Canada and then I just double the GST (so 14% of the before tax bill) That's a good tip in Canada. They are cheap bastards.

I laugh at some of the Canadians that come down here and go to pay and have no idea what to tip. They start looking on the bill for GST and ask me what the GST is when they can't find it. IDIOT, YOU ARE IN THE US... there is no GST here. That is just a Canadian thing. You are going to have to do a little math.

Elsewhere, 15% for shitty service, 20% for good service, whatever I feel like for stellar service, usually 25-30%.

It's funny that some think being a waiter is a shit job. There are a quite a few nice restaurants where I live and those waiters make a very nice living! I was talking to one of them at the end of the night and she told me her average Fri, Sat, Sun shift she would bring home $400+.

This interested me so I figured it out. The average wait staff will get 4 tables per waiter. Turnover in a good restaurant is every 1 3/4 hour. In an average shift they'll wait on 12-16 tables with an average bill of $175.00. So that's an average tip of $30 x 14 = $420 per night on the weekends. She was pulling down $1500 a week.

No doubt. After all the jobs I've had, including my current one, my favorite job to date was as a waiter at the Denny's in North Hollywood, California (at the corner of Burbank and Hollywood Way).

That was some great shit, the naked ladies, the swords, the whips, the fights, and on and on and on. Damn that was fun.

If I pay by card, assuming it is enough, I'll round to the next dollar. If that isn't enough, I'll add dollars until it is.

If I pay by cash, then I leave all my loose change.
