A sad day IMO when national guard troops have to be called in to a city to control crime.

A sad day when nothing was done about the situation in the first place.

What would you have done? Remember, we're talking about a violent crime spree here, not Katrina. (Unless you can provide some sort of logical connection between the two.)

Alot of people have that logic the "something bad happened to them so its not their fault that they do bad things". That song and dance has been used for thousands of years.

Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

It would be logical to not rebuild a flooded town in the same flood prone area where it risks getting flooded every summer.

Well, since this is one of America's oldest cities and played an integral part in the history of our nation, not all of those citizens must be "worthless trash."
As for seeing your tax money being set on fire than given to AMERICAN cities, it gets burned up every single day in Iraq. . .where several billion dollars disappeared into thin air. . .and the eventual cost of tending to the affairs of NON-Americans is expected to reach $800 billion.

    Of course not ALL....just most.

I would much rather send my tax dollars to the military in Iraq....however I am getting impatient with Iraq.

Well, since a lot of that money isn't earmarked for the soldiers, but for rebuilding an infrastructure that keeps being blown up, are we more responsible for Iraqis than we are for our own citizens?

We had some 120 countries offering money, aid and military forces to help New Orleans - we've heard nothing from this administration about what happened to any of that money, which includes some $2 billion alone that came from the government of Kuwait.

And our own government didn't even have the class to be embarassed about how El Salvador and Cuba offered troops to help Louisiana before our own government got its act together. That was a national humiliation. The purpose of the United States military is to protect the citizens and the property of the United States FIRST. Other than the Coast Guard, our response was terrible, and American citizens lost their lives without food or water. . .on American soil and in an American city.

Meth addiction levels are higher in the those rural shitholes than anywhere else in the country. Crime levels are not necessarily smaller at all. Farmers are dependent upon government subsidies, unemployment is higher in the towns and most of the young people eventually leave. Most every one of them that built a town civic center did so with federal/state funds - much of their law enforcement capability is dependent on support from larger government grants.

I honestly believe that it was not an embarresment. let's face it, you cannot count on the gov't to save your life in a natural disaster...at least on for the short term. I do not think we possess the power to counter a disaster of that magnitude. You only hear people cry about it more in New Orleans....Do you hear of the people in Mississippi complain as much? Its life. Someday we might reach a level of competence where we can deal with a natural disaster of that magnitude in 24hrs, but we aren't there yet.

Most, and perhaps all, of which was turned down. Few things in life are free, and I'm betting that the vast majority, and again, perhaps all, of that aid had strings (overt or otherwise) attached.

Offering, and actually supplying, are two different things. The response was terrible because they waited to ask for help. The Governor and Mayor dropped the ball. At the same time that New Orleans had a problem, so did city of Texas. What did the Texans do? They promptly asked for help and then took matter into their own hands and started doing things for themselves. What did they do in Louisiana? They waited to ask for the help, and once they did, they did nothing else.

Oh yeah, it sounds like it was the Feds problem...

We did allow foreign soldiers on our soil. Mexican soldiers were brought in to help in Louisiana and Mexico.

It was a colossal embarassment, and one which the general public witnessed not only on their television screens but among the many citizens from all walks of life who gathered materials, volunteered and traveled there only to be stopped at the outskirts of the city. And yes, the people of Mississippi have been complaining too - many are living in tents and trailers on empty lots that used to be their homes while government red tape lingers and insurance claims are delayed.

If we can't reach a level of competence to respond to major catastrophes which we know are coming, how can we react to an emergency or an attack? When the media can sit in an American city and videotape our own people dying of thirst in a nation with hundreds of thousands of airplanes capable of dropping a bottle of water, it is a national embarassment.
