Any ideas/ predictions on how the internet will evolve over the next ten years? Will there be a phase two internet?
The internet has changed how, why, where and who we communicate with each other, but has it helped us understand each other better?
For the most part, I think the internet has put us two steps back, and one step forward... one thing is for sure, with faster connections, waiting for anything: in line, on the freeway, etc. irritates me a lot more than it used to. A few years ago, when I did not have a high speed connection, I was a lot more patient. For instance, I just accepted that downloading stuff would take time and I was ok with that. Now I just expect everything in life to be fast and instant.
Debate.

Then the Mexicans will start playing MMOs, stop coming to work, and then the country will collapse.

"Phase two" of the internet might be IPv6 that has been in development for longer than some members here have been alive.
Although, something called "Internet 2" was/is in development and use by a couple universities in the US. I dont remember specifics, but the primary difference was in the backbone structure, IIRC.

The US let go of controlling the internet a very long time ago.Originally Posted by KelJu

I think the internet helps us communicate better and understand people's ideas and opinions. For example, if you were building a deck you would most likely check out the internet for ideas. If you needed a special tool to build your deck you could just buy one instantly off ebay. In ten years I see everybody having some sort of computer to communicate. You can already watch your tv with your laptop through the slingbox. Philadelphia is going to be all WiFi in a few years. I predict the whole U.S will be WiFi by 2020. I read that GPS will notify you about traffic and detour accordingly in the future. I love to see advances in technology.

The Internet 2 already exists, it just isn't widespread yet. I'm not sure what the major difference are except that it uses IPv6 to increase the number of available IP addresses by a huge margin. It is supposedly designed in such a way that latency is drastically reduced.

Millions of people will be forced to pay a 'congestion charge' for sending email under plans being developed by American telephone companies to create a 'two-tier' internet.
In a move which campaigners warn will destroy the openness and equality of the worldwide web, the US telecommunications group AT&T is lobbying politicians to allow the development of 'fast' and 'slow' internet services.

Nearly everything will be network capable and nearly any device will be able to talk to any other device. You'll be able to preheat your stove with your cell phone on the way home. I also believe that video chat will become quite common.
This may take more than 10 years, but it's not that far off.
