Going to New York... Need Ideas

Hey everyone, I'm going to New York with a friend and a couple next weekend for a day or two and I need ideas for what to do. I think it will be everyone's first time there. I'm not looking to spend too much, not a high roller by any means, but we definitely do want to have a good time. Where should we go, where should we eat, and what are some good clubs?

I should also note that I will be in New Jersey as well. We already have plans for going to Six Flags Great Adventure but no ideas on where to eat and no plans for after Six Flags.

I'm really pumped for Six Flags. It's the largest one in the chain and has several record setting rollercoasters there including "the tallest (456 feet), fastest (128 mph in 3.3 seconds) roller coaster on earth" and the steepest wooden rollercoaster on earth.

First time, stick with the basics.

See if there's a Mets' or Yankee's game, check out The Empire State Building, Central Park, and Times Square. Also, the Tower's site is something else if you up to it.

For Dinner, little pricey, but this place rocks... http://www.churrascariaplataforma.com/

As far as bars, I like to walk around the village or the upper west and see whats hopping... I'm not big on clubs in NY, I'm not greasing palms unless its Vegas.

Thanks for the suggestions, nut. I'm not really into baseball, but the other stuff sounds good. I think Times Square is for sure already. About the "Tower's site," do you mean Tower Records? I am not very familiar with New York. Also, where is the village?

Wow, the Plataforma looks really fancy. Not to sound like a cheapskate, but do you know if it'll run me more than $30 a meal? I'm only planning on spending about $150 for the weekend not including gas or the Six Flags tickets since I already purchased them.

    Thanks again for your suggestions.

While your at the Twin Tower memorial you can walk just a few blocks East and your in Chinatown, a couple of blocks more and you will hit Little Italy.....what's left of it. Chinatown is in canal street and the heart of little Italy is on Mulberry street.

By Delancy St. which is not from from there you will find CBGB's if it's still there.

The Village is pretty cool to hang out, especially the bars. Just make sure you don't go to a gay bar, it's a well known area for homosexuals....tell you what though, they sure know how to party.

We talked about going to Chinatown but neither of us really wanted to go. I've been to the Chicago and San Fran Chinatowns and they just aren't my thing. More something my parents would enjoy. But we may end up going anyway. Little Italy sounds interesting. What's good there?

Not sure what CBGB's are. A restaurant?

Any specific bars to check out? Do they have dress codes?

It's a club, that's where Blondie and the Ramones first made it big.

Some of the best Italian restaurants and deli's are located there.

I've retired from the bar scene years ago so I don't know of any good bars, although I would recommend the bars in the village.

42nd street is not what it was once, it's now disney.

Just ask they cab driver to take you to the West Village or take the subway.

    Subway stops:
1, 9 to Christopher Street-Sheridan Square for West Village
    A, B, C, D, E, F,V to West 4th Street
N, R to 8th Street for Greenwich Village

Plataforma is about $70 per person depending on how much you drink. Head to the village and walk around, all types of nice diners and bars serving food, it'll be cheap that way.

Great ideas guys. Mino, so CBGB is a dance club? Do you know of any clubs/bars that play piano music? My friend's idea.

I will check out the Village. The West Village is what I should ask for then? Thanks for the detailed subway info The Nut. Is the subway system pretty safe and easy to use in New York?

Platforma is a little pricey for me, I will take the suggestion of going to the village. Any specific diners or bars you remember being good?

    a Coney Dog!!

It's like one of the best chili dogs with cheese youll ever eat!!

Coney_Island is a pretty cool place to check out (or at least it used to be). Lots of cool things to do. Amusement park atmosphere. Tons of history. min0 might have more insight.

what kind of clubs are you looking for? the club scene in NY is very expensive, a regular night out is 100 bucks if you drink a couple of drinks plus cover.

as far as food for not too much money, i recommend Cafeteria, on 7th ave and 17th street. last time i was there i ran into Mariah Carey (she's hot in real life) and from what i hear lots of celebs hang out there all the time.

i live in Brooklyn so the city is nothing special anymore, i can't really think of anything to do when i'm there unless i'm going out or just walking/driving around and people watching.

A coney is probably a hot dog from Coney Island which is in Brooklyn. Its not what it used to be but can be fun and inexpensive, The Cyclone is a landmark, then you have bumper cars and buggies and all those stupid carnival games that frustrate the shit out of you.

West Village or Greenwich Village, they'll know what you mean. Subways are fine. Late night, after 3a.m. or so, is sometimes is a little sketchy.

My favorites in the village are John's Pizzeria (278 Bleecker st) for dinner, Cafe Rafaella (134 Seventh Avenue) for unbelievable desserts (I like the cognac pumpkin cheesecake), and Chumley's for drinks. Chumley's is a former speak easy, its located in the rear courtyard of building at 86 Bedford St. It's an unmarked door, and the password is prohibition. This place is a layed back atmosphere and is mostly and younger crowd. You'll have a blast there. All are reasonably priced and in the village not to far from each other (off Seventh Ave). Mapquest them.

But walk around, you'll see places your gonna wanna stop in. That's the best thing about big cities... there's something for everyone.

Also, when I'm with a date, I hit Central Park and the Met Museum of Art (I'm not a fan of art either) ... both inexpensive, time consuming and good places to get to know someone.

There are so many places to go in NYC, you would need more than a week to really see all of it.

Central park is very pretty and romantic, you can take your girl in one of those horse rides around the park.

Coney Island was the place to go years ago, the original Nathans is still there I believe......but it got hit hard with the gangs back in the 70's and 80's. I haven't been there in years so...

    Witmaster,
I have heard of Coney Island before but didn't really know what it was about. We may check it out if it isn't too far away. We are going to Six Flags the day before so I don't know if we'd stay long.

    Yanick,
I had no idea clubs were that expensive. How much is cover typically? And do they never have drink specials? Maybe we'll have to get real wasted before heading out.

Cafeteria sounds nice, we will probably check this one out. Is this more of a sit down restaurant or just a grab and go type? And would you recommend this for lunch, snack, or dinner?

    The nut,
Thanks, I will probably check out both those places for food. Is there a dress code for Chumley's and I have to ask, why is there a password to get in? We may check this one out as well. Thanks for the addresses, they will surely come in handy. I believe we will be going to Central Park too just to be able to say we went to Central Park, but I think we'll pass on Museum as I'm not a huge fan of these either and we don't have much time in NY to check everything out.

Thanks to everyone for all the help, you guys have really made my trip for me! Keep the suggestions coming if you have any more.

No dresscode at all, it's a place to chill... good crowd, low lighting, not to crazy. It used to be a speaky easy during prohibition, and that was the password to get in. Sometimes they will ask it at the door, though I've never seen anyone turned away.
