    Norton Anti-virus

I bought my laptop, microsoft office (with all the programs i needed), and norton anti-virus last year before school. I have been using my laptop all year and everything went well.

I just got a message popup from norton anti-virus today that i need to update it or it will expire on August 24th. When i click on renew subscription, it asks for my subscription key. However, i do not know it and i'm not really sure what it is. Do i need to call them and ask or do i just pop in the disc i used to install it last year or do i need to buy a new one?

The smarter thing to do would be to uninstall Norton and install the free version of AVG from Grisoft. I use it at home and use the professional version at the office.

I've been using it for almost three years and have yet to get a virus. The free version doesn't have any nag screens either. It also has an email scanner.

Maybe it is not an authentic software. Microsoft office and norton are very expensive softwares probably like $1000 together. How much was your laptop?

I check every running process on my PC at least once a week. I'm not so much paranoid as I am a power freak. I make it a point to squeeze out every last bit of power that I can from my PC. This also includes overclocking everything in my PC that can be overclocked. When I have no running applications, my memory usage is a mere 133 megs.

It should be on the disk or the envelope your disk came in.............

Norton is an evil product that sticks it's little tendrils of doom into every dark crevice and cranny of your computer, slows it down and causes more problems than it cures.

To get the new Subscription key you gotta call Symantec and buy the new one over the phone where they'll give you a new key or try it online, but I tried that way for a client and their website was screwing up so calling is best, if you want to keep Norton, I would go the free way myself.

It does especially at start-up not only is it scanning everything, but it's trying to check for updates.

I have used AVG for about 4 years, and it works great for a free application.

You guys are all crazy, bitdefender is the best by far. Norton, along with Macafee are the worst out there. Do some research before you go waste your money on another shitty antivirus.

I have a client that uses BitDefender. That thing launches a shitload of processes and the server version's process tends to run amok.

How is Norton bad? I have been using it for years since 2000 and it has blocked over millions of viruses ranging from minor to major. I'm getting mixed reviews from all of you guys so i'm not sure what to do.

DOMS told me to use the program he is using and i was planning out trying that out but Mudge says Avast is better. Some others have private messaged me and they tell me they know how to get around the subscription key and having Norton for free. I'm lost now.

Just do with AVG Free. You'll install it, it'll update itself, initiate scans by itself, and you'll never hear from it again unless is finds a virus; And you'll never get a virus (I haven't for years).

I almost forgot to answer this.

    It's bad because:

    It's a resource hog
It's just as buggy as the rest of Norton's/Symantec's products.
    Shitty user interface
    It'll fight with other programs
    It'll miss viruses

I've had two client with two different computers running Norton AV (NAV). They both had me look at them because they were acting "weird." I ran NAV on both machines. The first PC scan turned up 1 virus, the second turned up no viruses.

I uninstalled NAV and installed AVG. The first scan turned up over 160 infected files (not in quarantines, restore folders, or browser cache). The second scan (on the second PC) turned up almost 200 infected files.

Short version: Norton Anti-Virus sucks ass.

Never run two AV together. You can download it AVG now, but don't install it until you remove NAV. You might as well just wait to download it until you need it though.
