    Networking help

Sorry, I know this has nothing to do with anything, but I don't know who else to ask.

I have just hooked up my and my roommates computer to a router, ran network wizard, did all the steps about 15 times, and I still can't not only share files but also cant even see him in my network places... I am very frustrated, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank everyone.

Are you sure that they are both using the same domain or workgroup name?

    Wireless or hardwire network?

Can both PCs ping and/or access the router?

Hooking them up to a router is not going to network them for sharing files. It will give them both access to the internet but you can't share until you've created your domain.

Exactly. I have a feeling that they are't on the same domain or workgroup, otherwise it should at least be visible in network places.

Once that's done, you have to alter the drive properties so that sharing is enabled for the login used on the other computer.

They have a trust based relationship. SHARE the folders out which contains the files you want to share (you can't share files, only folders/dirs). Once shared, simply connect to the networked machines via UNC path.

    Example:

start > run > type \\192.168.1.102 Hit enter. IF the machine is in the same workgroup (this guy aint going to set up no domain here)--then you will be able to browse shared files....ASUMING you are running a winnt OS like 2k, or xp.

If you're too lazy to create the shares, just use the "hidden admin share."

\\192.168.1.102\c$ now enter the admin user name and password of the remote machine.

Thanks everyone, sorry for the delayed response
Manic - they are both XP, mine is professional, his is not a registered copy of professional
V - I dont know how to get files from his comp to mine Through the interweb
Monkeyman - I'm not sure but I thought I was using the appropriate directory on both
Cowpimp - I ran the wizard on both, I know for sure the same Workgroup name was used. I am using a hardwire router, which is accessed by both computers
DOMS - thanks, when I clicked that all the applying hyperlinks were purple, I already read them.
Damn, I though I had a pretty Good grasp on this whole computer thing till I got to Roberts and Jodi's
Robert - I went to local security policies but could not find out how to enable guest accounts
Jodi - I looked up how to create a domain, found that I need to do it in my POP3 services, it says to open POP3 by:
To open the POP3 service snap-in, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click POP3 Service
when I get to Admin. Tools, there is no such option for POP3
BigDyl - was \\192.168.1.102 tried to Run it it said the path could not be found. I'm also not to sure about this - 'this guy aint going to set up no domain here'. nor this \\192.168.1.102\c$
If anyone is still with me thanks again

You're absolutely sure they're not showing up on the opposing computer's "My Network Places?" If they don't show up there, yet both of the computers can access the router, then something is fishy. Have you tried something as simple as switching around which port in the router the computers are connected to and then rebooting them and the router? Sometimes it's something that easy. I'm bad at doing this over the Internet; I'm much better at solving problems in person, heh.

He probably did some crazy shit in TCP/IP properties and disabled netbios, and now can't browse through network places by computer name.

You should try to ping the other computers and see if they can communicate.

Click start, run, type in cmd, and hit enter. Then, type ipconfig. It will list the IP address (LAN IP). Try to ping the other computer's IP address and make sure they can communicate. If so, then you should be able to share the drive you need.

Go to user accounts > click guest > make sure it is turned on

Anything you want to share put in the
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents folder

Do you have the firewall turned on both XP boxes?

Forget about domain, you want to use Workgroups

Right click my computer, prop. > Name > click on change at the bottom > choose workgroup > *whatever youwant* and then do the same on his pc.

Then do the IP settings make sure that you both don't have the same IP adress, the subnet is same and gateway is same the click WINS and NETbios setting is default.

It could matter that once he can see each pc in browsing they still can't share.

It's been a while since I've had wireless forever but don't the cables have to be setup right to allow sharing, they can still see the internet through the router, just can't communicate with each other? You have to cross the pair or something?

BidDyl, its possible but not likely.
Cowpimp, thanks, I will ping as soon as my roommate gets home.
Manic, I do have a firewall and I think he does as well. But My guest account was off, and I did turn it On. Where do I click WINS and NETbios to set it to default. and manic are you talking about the cat5e cable between the comp, and switching to 'A' instead of 'B' setup? I do have a roll of cat5 and some ends and a crimper, should I try?

I was just able to ping the other computer, and also now can see both computers on the view workgroup computers, but still cannot see his shared files.
Also, when I go to Ipconfig, our ip's are different but when I check online, it says they are the same. could that be the problem

I know I'm probably talking to myself by now, but I can view 'my workgroup computers' on my comp but his says something like "cannot allow ask administrator for access"

No, that's normal. Your WAN IP address will be the same. That's actually the router that outside sources are accessing. There is other information contained in the packets that make sure they get routed to the correct computer.

What information do you have entered in the share properties for the drives you want to share?

We are not trying to share any drives just folders, (I can put a drive on it if I need to) the folder I am trying to share: Network sharing and security I have both; share this folder on the network, and allow network users to make changes. His folder, just share this folder.
He still cant view: My network computers. It says "the admin has to allow access"
Thanks again cowpimp, BTW its there really an Albert Einstein HS? Thats kinda cool
