    Taste and memory

Does anyone have any stories that connect taste to a specific memory?

I had some spicy BBQ sauce at my friends house this past weekend and it brought back an intense memory of being at a church picnic when I was 11 or 12. I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was late summer and I was playing baseball with a mixture of kids, and aldults. I was in outfield and there were a lot of mosquitoes, which made it hard to concentrate on the game. I remember that the ball only came out to where I was once and that I threw the ball to the third baseman who happened to be an unattractive, stocky girl with blonde hair who I think was close to my age.
After the game we all walked back to where the picnic site. I swear I can still feel the gravel road beneath my cheap runners and the smell of logs burning. The sun was low and shinning into my eyes and the temperature had dropped just enough to need a sweater.

the sense of smell/taste has link to memory that illicits memories very easily! I forget why at the moment, but when I remember I'll chime back in!

Nope. Even at this tender age, I knew church events were the best places to steal from. A lot of trusting people go to those things and leave their coats unattended. I looked at it as compensation for all the bad sermons I was forced to sit through. It was an easy $400 + a weekend. How do you think I bought my first bike?

When I smell oregano I think of this pizza place in Queens.

It's mammalian instict, all other animals have keen senses of smell to detect predators in order to help them they have a more keen ability to store the olfactory memories. It also helped them to remember where a certain patch of food was, like a chipmunk stashing nuts...

"Hey last time I smelled that Rosco the White-Tail Deer had a wolverine drop from a tree and rip his spine from his back..."
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

when i was younger i went to an incompetant dentist who didn't know how to properly administer the novacaine shot. when he was drilling my teeth the pain was unbearable but i was young and gullible and felt that i was just being a pussy because "hey he's a doctore and i'm a kid"

well the smell of burning tooth infiltrated my nostrils like no other and somehow got 'attached' to the pain in my tooth from the drilling. now when i smell similar (burning smell) i get a twinge in that same tooth.

Hey I have had a similar thing, i had a toenail removed by incompetent ER Techs in the Navy who went light on the numbing shots and then shoved a scalpel under my toenail and yanked it off with those clamping scissor things fuck it hurt baaaaad. Now when I smell that sterile smell of hospitals I get a sore feeling in that toe, even when I open a box of bandaids....
