Gym Calls Police On Weightlifter Who 'Grunted'
Man Made Noise While Lifting 500 Pounds
POSTED: 6:48 am CST November 3, 2006
ALBANY, N.Y. -- You could forgive a guy for grunting while lifting 500 pounds -- unless you're the owners of a place called Planet Fitness.
It turns out that grunting isn't allowed in their universe.
Corrections officer Albert Argibay learned that the hard way this week. He was hoisting 500 pounds on a machine at the Wappingers Falls, N.Y., gym when the manager said he grunted -- in violation of the Planet Fitness rules.
Argibay said whether or not he grunted is "open to interpretation." What's crystal clear is that police were called to escort him out after the manager came over and there was an argument.
The gym said they don't allow grunting because it conflicts with the non-intimidating atmosphere they strive for.
The gym, which refers to itself as the judge-free zone, has the following statement on its Web site:
Planet Fitness strives to promote health in a respectful atmosphere. For over a decade, Planet Fitness has gone to great lengths to provide its members with a friendly space to work out. We call it the Judgment Free Zone. We discourage weight dropping and obnoxious grunting so you can focus on your own workout and not the person next to you.

I heard that on the radio this morning. I sure won't be stepping inside a Planet Fitness anytime in the future.
Damn, then I guess those rat bastards would probably shoot me if I released one of my Double Latte egg protein lactose intolerant 10 second long Flutter blasts in the place.![]()

Hey BF.
It makes sense to not allow grunting. People who grunt typically lift heavy weights and are in the gym all the time, the people who complain about it spend 3 weeks in January and then never come back until the following January. Nothing like an empty gym taking $40 a month from 1000 people.

it would seem like your body is grunting for a reason. put your hands on your abdomen and grunt like you would when lifting heavy weight. your muscles are involved in the grunting n hmmmm maybe it helps prevent a hernia or something who knows. sue the idiots.

Hey pretty lady, how's you? Fade still being a deadbeat? Kick has ass for me.![]()
I was in a discussion on another board about this very article. As absolutely stupid as I think the rule is, it's their gym, they can make the rules. Planet Fitness is primarily geard toward females. (Obviously not the high class kind of females that hang around here.) Their rules also ban bandanas and do-rags, among other things. The intent is to not intimidate the target clientele. Again, I think it's an absolutely stupid rule, but that's their right.
Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???
BAN HER!
Gym's seem to be more categorized lately. In the town I'm from, there are a quite a bit of gyms to choose from, each with a different mentality.
-I go to Golds Gym in my hometown, where basically it is a comfortable enviroment, no strict rules. Do what you have to do to exercise.
-Then there is some Powerlifting gym, where each advertisement claims to be the hardcore gym of the state. i bet you grunt and scream just changing in the locker room there
-Bally's Total Fitness.... enough said
-Family Fitness, an inexpensive gym to go to, with mainly inexperienced lifters/people who aren't really into it and are just appealed from the price tag. Of course has some guys that are pretty freakin strong, but it's a family orientated gym. Bring the kids, have a picnic, do some squats, whatever.
-Fitness "Club"... can't remember the exact name. I applied for a job this past summer at this one, and got lost in it. It was room after room of class training. I don't even think they had a weight rack! Dominately class training, which is cool, but not appealing to myself at all.
In a way, it's a good thing - people who are tepid to begin working out can find the enviroment they think is ideal for a gym and get to it. But on the other hand, if the rules don't agree with your personality, it hinders your workout.

I told ya'll about Planet Gheyness about a year ago. It is the most pathetic excuse of a gym I have ever seen. It isn't even a gym. It is a social club. They call themselves the judgement free zone. I call it the fitness free zone.
“I used to do drugs. I still do drugs. But I used to, too.”
What a joke. Why didnt the gym owner just ask him to keep it down or something. I dont think there was a need to call the cops. I think every member should boycott that gym.
I heard an interview on the radio with the Planet Fitness employee who was involved. The guy grunted and she told him it was against the rules and asked him to stop. He refused and according to the woman, try to intimidate her. That's when the cops were called. Why the dude ever joined there I'll never know.
