    Preservation of Liberty

"The preservation of Liberty depends upon the intelectual and moral character of the people. As long as knowlege and virtue are diffused generally among the body of a nation, it is impossible they should be enslaved........" John Adams

So I'm reading JOHN ADAMS by David McCullough and i saw this quote and I really liked it.

That took a lot of guts to say a thing like that in those days.
As a member of the United States House of Representatives in the 1830s, former President John Quincy Adams performed some of his noblest service to his country as a staunch and oftentimes courageous spokesman for the abolition of slavery. Yet he wisely knew and accepted the limitations placed upon him. In October 1837, he addressed his situation in his diary: I have gone as far upon this article, the abolition of slavery, as the public opinion of the free portion of the Union will bear, and so far that scarcely a slave-holding member of the House dares to vote with me upon any question.

i believe both of those are slowly dissappearing in our country. not to throw down blanket statements, but i feel like 95% of people in the world are stupid and morally void. although the latter issue could be argued as its a subjective thing altogether, i'm equating moral values with selflessness and wanting to better a people, a community/society w/e not just your own personal situation. when i meet someone who is atleast somewhat of an intellectual i tend to keep try and stay close to them as those are the people who are few and far in between.

I recomend reading a book on this subject called " Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee", about the Native American stuggle in yonder days, its a heart breaking but very intresting read. History is one of my favourite subjects to read about.

thanks minO. i didnt know you cared What does everyone think? Is knowlege and virtue dieing in the US? if you look at past civilizations all fell because of the loss of knowlege, virtue, or both in the people. look at any of the south american civilizations, Rome, Greece, Ottoman, Persian, Egyptian, each one fell due to the loss of these. The Founding Fathers knew this when they set up our country.

I think most people are still good, overall. I'm sure with the advances in technology, people are more distanced from others than in the past. (the joke of texting your kids upstairs to tell them dinner is ready kind of thing)

I think its just that we hear more about the negative. 'evil' sells more than good stories.
But, then again...maybe I look at the world with 'rose colored glasses'.

I don't think so, I come across some people who don't have pride, common nor respect for people around them.

I really do admire those who come out of bad neighborhoods and make something out of themselves regardless of how some people who think they are better put them down.

It can be the parents but I have also seen some parents seek help only to be lost in the system or told that nothing can be done.

There's also a lack of a real leader in this country, fuck that overseas crap, we should concentrate on our own country.

I live in the city so my opinions may vary from someone in the suburbs or elsewhere.

The breakdown is in the homes. Parents are failing their children. Government is failing their citizens. It is a cultural shift. It happens to almost every culture. Greed is the only thing keeping the country going at this point. The breakdown will be when our laziness out weighs our greed and we sell our liberties back to the government in exchange for free handouts and an illusion of safety.
