Need a Nerd

I opened up Firefox jsut now and all my bookmarks are gone, and my Live bookmakrs tab is gone, its just a blank statusbar.

I read through the forum on the firefox site but couldnt understand most of the pc talk, so i made a new profile and am slowly adding everything back on.

Help?

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Here you'll find your new, and old, profiles. Go into your old profile and copy the bookmarks.html file to your new profile.

Not sure which is the and which is the new? Just check the creation dates of the folders.

I saw that before, there's no application data folder in documetns and settings

maybe its hidden or under a diff name?

In Windows explorer (what you use to view files), do this:

1. On the toolbar, go to Tools -> Folder Options
2. Click on the "View" tab
3. Click the radio button that reads "Show hidden files and folders".
4. Click "OK"

You'll now be able to see the hidden folders. Don't forget to turn it back off when you're done.

There's two Andy profiles since I amde a new one, and I can;t tell which is which. Neither is dated.

One has 5 html bookmark files, the other has 1. Is the one w/ one the newest one? Shuold I delte the bookmarks I jsut added before moving the same ones and a unch of others over to the enw one?

Wait, hold on.

the bookmark things I jsut counted off were int eh bookmark backup folders

In the main profile folder there is bookmarks.html file, a bookmarks-1.html file, and a bookmark.bak file

In the other main profile theres a bookmarks.html and a bookmark.bak file

When your in the 'Profiles' folder, go to the windows toolbar again and click on View -> Details. You'll now see the dates of each folder. You'll want to go to the oldest one. There may be serveral files with the name "bookmarks", but you'll not be able to tell which is the correct one because you're not able to see the file extensions.

The easy way: look for one that looks like a shortcut for Internet Explorer or FireFox. Another way to figure it out (if there are more than two) is that one will have an icon different from the others. That's the one that you want to copy.

Once you figure out which folder is older, copy only the "bookmark.html" file to the newer folder.

Turns out the bugged file was the bookmarks.html file itself, so as soon as I put it in the new profile the new profile fucked itself again. I'm recreating another one, any idea on hwo to avoid this or fix it? I'm dopwnloading an extension to start backing up my bookmarks

Go back to the old profile folder, then copy and rename the bookmarks.bak file to the new profile as bookmarks.html.

both bak files are corrupted now since I guess the html files were counter parts of them?

No.

The "bak" files are just that: Backups. They exists just for this reason. I'm not say that they are definitely usable, but it's a 90% likelihood that they are usable.

Try opening the bookmark.html with FireFox. It's just an HTML page with links on it. What happens?

For the new profile it has a low def page w/ links to all my bookmarks, for the messed up profile the link is only 1kb and says Bookmarks in big bold font and no links below it, but the page still opens

No it's cool, I've got all my extensions back and about half my bookmarks. The ones I can't remember I guess arent that important. Unfortuanetly, all those configuration edits I made after reading them online. You know, the ones you use about:config to get to.

So long as it's all good for you. Myself, I have over 500 bookmarks and have them backed up in numerous places.

You can always try storing your bookmarks online.

Oh, and don't worry, you 100+ porn bookmarks wouldn't have bothered me.

I have many, many areas of interest. Plus, these bookmarks have been building up for years. I go through them a few times each year to organize them and check for dead bookmarks.

The add-on simply keeps your bookmarks on a server, where you can login from any FireFox that uses that extension and *bam*, there's your bookmarks.

I don't know much more about it. I don't use them. I just know that many people swear by it.

Since you're adept at this, which extensions do you use/ how do you yourself back up your bookmarks? Thirdly, have you made any of those changes int eh about:config thing? All mine are lsot now.
