What would say to a lazy friend who could benefit the world greatly?

Imagine you had a friend who is a super genious, the guy could cure cancer. But he has no motivation because nothing is a challenge to him. how do you motive him? how could you make him care? what would you say to him? Remember LAZY.

Too person-specific. If he's such a great friend then you should know.

Like I said, it depends too much on the person. For some people it may be a bet, a competition, w/e.

Mind telling us the full story? What's the person unmotivated about?

If it's school please delete this thread now, I'm sure many of us have heard the "so much potential" talk before, school isnt for everyone. It's geared towards the majority and the minority quickly lsoe interest.

Lazy may be a good description of him, but bored may be a better.
Some people (like myself) have a very difficult time doing things that do not interest me. I can do them, but when they don't apply to things I care about, or things that even madder, I often get viciously bored. But I don't consider myself anything close to a genius just yet, so that may be a tough comparison.

He needs to find something he wants to do. There is something that motivates him. Although it's common for people to label someone as lazy, it's barely ever true. Are you trying to bring him into weight lifting?

    You either:

    A) realize you should put in the effort now so that you can have 4 happy years in a good university.

B)you're so turned off and used to not putting in alot of effort you either accept a shitty college, community college, or a diferent path ie trade school, military, or full-time job

And saying you could benefit the world greatly while you're still in school isn't exactly modest/

If he is that lazy he probably doesn't know that much dude. Maybe if you expressed a little doubt in his abilities, maybe he would set out to prove you wrong. But he could also be one of those people who is good at making himself look smart/successful, but is really not all that bright. Some people are excellent scammers. Laziness breeds laziness, he has to want to change that. Is he fat yet?

I disagree. I had an A average all through school till the broedom overtook me. It takes very little IMO to get good grades before college. Study, test, homework.

It's not worth it for me, I can't keep my attention sitting in 2 hour classes 7 hours a day, at 7am, after 5 hours of sleep.

IMHO, that's one of the reasons I'm enlisting. Which, btw, I've used as a point in the last 15 threads I've been in, I feel like it's only a matter of time till Snafu hunts me down.

It's up to you. We could talk for hours, but it'll either be a self-realization that you should suck it up and do it, or a risk of a bad grade.

I'll go ahead and play the devil on your shoulder since no one else will. You have an A average and sound almost done w/ school. It's a risk of a bad grade on an exam, but that exam grade probably won't affect you too much a year from now, and although it's a risk, fortune favors the bold.

Which means you know at least as much as they were teaching, which is a far cry from someone who is about to cure cancer. Your A average here would probably impress the 3rd graders in Japan though.

No one is curing cancer here. This thread is still about school.

That doesn't sound like he is that lazy. My dad was doing calculus in Jr High School as part of regular ciriculum. When I was young and talking about cars, he was telling me about his design for hybrids being superior to the idea of an all electric car. We are talking over 20 years ago, for him being roughly 45 years ago.

There are lots of smart people out there, who impress the dumb0r. I've met some really impressive people, not everyone wants to apply themselves though. Even of those 'really impressive people' probably none of them are the caliber that are going to make a difference in the world so much to be remembered as an Einstein or even a Tesla who was nearly wiped from historical importance.

I suppose what I'm saying is, if you feel like being noble and expending the effort thats awful nice, but some people feed off that attention and will be even lazier for it. Spend your energy running your own life, unless you are trying to get into management.

But his friend supposedly is 'probably' smart enough to get going on that goal, hence my comment.

Always wondered why we never learned about Nikola Tesla in school. If that were the case he could always move somewhere else, where invention, math and science are more highly focused on. Parts of India, Princeton NJ, etc.
