Any ideas how to get around this so I can get my data. I wanna get past this, retrieve my data and then scrub the HDD.

Win XP Media 2003 I think is the OS on an HP laptop.

Install a different copy of XP or reinstall the same one. You wont lose any data.

Another alternative is to use Knoppix.

I just want on the HDD so I can pull off data ... pics, music and such. Maybe my links from firefox and a few things that don't come to mind rt now. Then I will prolly install Vista just to torment myself a little further.

Mind ya it won't boot, won't allow me past that message.

Did you have another machine you could have put the drive in and access it?

Yes. The laptop HD is a specification.

In order for him to have attached it to another machine, he would have needed an external housing for laptop HDs, though.

Oh, and you could've booted into Safe Mode with Networking to transfer your files across your network.

If your friends made an external connection for a 2.5" HD from the parts of a laptop, they're pretty bad ass when it comes to technology. That would be way beyond my skills.

They are I.T. guys where I work.

They kinda remind me of those underground nerds that Moulder would always go to for answers in "X files".

The version of Linux that I'd recommend is Ubuntu. Here's a little info over at Wiki.

Here's a great book about moving to Ubuntu. Or, if you want something a bit more technical, get his one. Or, if you're very computer literate, get this one.

Like I've said before, I'm not going to get Vista. DRM my ass.

FYI DOMS when this message comes up "This copy of windows must be activated with microsux before you can log on" then you cannot log on with networking transfer ... it just sends you back to the activation screen.

This laptop was running a version of WinXPMedia from my favorite site ... the one you warned me not to post about ***cough*** MiniNova. I had the microsux validation beat but when I went to install this unit on my network I brainfarted and re-installed SP2 to repair the networking transfer protocal. That also restored the validation script so as soon as I rebooted I was in lockdown status for a bogus key

SO Imma install some iteration of linux if there is a stable media center ver out there. I promised myself I'd torture myslf with linux this year anyway.

Did you Google for a solution? I bet you could have booted from a Knoppix CD and fixed the problem.

Oh, and mininova is the shit. Though it's been kind of slow lately.

Torture? Not likely! Try installing and using Slackware back in '96! That was torture! I had to do crap like configure X-Term by hand.

I tired to install linux back in 98 from a .raw tarball. I never could get it to work. I am still pissed that I was bested by that installation.

Ninja Edit* I have better luck using ISOHunt. The yjust merged with piratebay, and they run spyders to collect links from the public trackers, I am pretty sure you get more seeds with ISOHunt.

A second person that's into Yiddish.

Isohunt merged with The Pirate Bay? Since when? I just went to both of their sites and neither says anything about that?

Isohunt has a large selection, but it lacks the feature that I like: comments. Both mininova and The Pirate Bay have user comments so you can find out if the files are password protects, not what they claim to be, or just plain garbage.

Oh, and Bittorrent Junkie is a pretty good site too. They seem to have some torrents that no one else does. They had (nearly) the complete Cook Like a Chef series. Torrent Spy is also pretty good.
