    Coaching

Has/does anyone here coach a sport? My second season as a house league basketball coach is about to start, and I think it's pretty safe to say I'm more pumped in the games than some of my players or even when I played. Any stories from you other coaches, or experiences you had watching amateur coaches?

I almost got into it witht his one coach last year, my first year. I had a Bo Schembechler moment against Hayes( you love that analogy nut, funk, and jerseydevil). He was defending champ and undefeated at the time and we came back to beat him 44-40, which might as well be 215-200 at that age. I'm pretty sure I had the first ever 4th grade team running a 1-2-2 zone and taking charges.

I've coached some youth hockey teams. Have had mostly positive experiences with it. No real horror stories to share from behind the bench. As a spectator I did almost fight a coach for belittling a kid but he deserved an ass beating.
to be the man you have to beat the man.

Come coach hockey in Canada, I bet you would have a different opinion.

It is borderline retarded up here with hockey moms.

Depending on the level of hockey and age. I think full contact begins on rep teams at 12-13 yo. Which is rediculous, cause there is such a veriance in size at that age.

I would like to see them keep contact out until 16, and develop the skills more.

Regular house leagues are non-contact, but there is incidental contact it is just a part of the game.

16 sounds a bit old to me to wait on contact. Or maybe I'm jsut an asshole and was overly competitive as a child.

A coach last year got angry when I had kids start taking the obvious charges, and I told him to stop having his kids play so aggressively coming down the lane. No contact in hockey under 16 sounds like youre jsut limiting the bigger or defensive minded players.

I would rather see skill develop then worry about laying out the big hit. Plus it limits a number of the smaller players, who other wise would be an asset to the team.

I think when I played contact started at 11. It was no big deal to me as I was one of the bigger kids, but the emphasis on skill development was limited once contact was introduced.

True, but the big hit and playing a physical game as a smaller player are both valuable skills later on IMO

Unfortunately when you introduce hitting at that age, there is such a wide size range, some kids can be 6' plus while others just breaking 5'. The speed and physicality of the game tends to ween out the smaller players.

Remember this is just a game for fun. The chances of making anything professional out of it is like winning the lottery.

    Oh I know.

I guess the way I see it, the development for overall skills should start immediately. I started playing basketball when I could barely tell my colors from my numbers, and I still play. I learned early how to play as a smaller, white player, and now that I play in adult leagues as the token smaller, whiter player I can run the court well.

Having said that, basketball doesnt include much checking.

    Exactly.

Imagine 13 year old kids being told they are allowed to use full contact now. What is there first reaction? Take someones fucking head off.

Look at the skill set of many of the european players in the NHL, pretty damn impressive, why imo is cause they don't ephasize the contact. However it seems they lack the heart and drive that most Canadian players do. I guess there has to be a middle ground.

Only one of the MVP honors out of 2 in baseball, and it'll never happen again. Didn't an American coach jsut win the Stanley Cup?

No he is a decent coach, was the US national coach as well. I just don't feel he has that much of an impact on them winning the cup

Just over half the roster is Canadian

CFL is over. Grey cup was the other weekend. BC Lions Beat the Montreal Allouettes.

Not that big. It is a good game, just the caliber of player isn't there with the NFL. For whatever reason Grey cup gets huge rating numbers up here, but that is the only time.

Do you consider Canada independent? The Queen and British flag are on your money and flag. The Queen has you pussy whipped.

Why aren't we independant? Cause we have historical link?

We are more a 51st state, then any affiliation to the Brits.

Thats true. I like Canada, I wouldnt mind adding a star to my flag.

It's jsut that what I said before would be like having Bush on your money, and the American Flag on your flag. That's not independent independent.
