So, what do you guys think? Is Aikido any good in the real world?
Also, does anyone have a footage of a Aikido being used in a real fight?
Thanks for any input!

Doesn't Steven Seagal use that technique? Or a hybrid version?
It looks bad-ass on film![]()

Yes, and it does all that, if you are advanced
The best example is in "Marked for death" when he fights the two jamaicans
in the jewelry store, also in the drug house later in the movie, he again takes on two more thugs...
Good examples of Aikido movement and strategy (but fake)

The basic idea of Aikido is to use the opponents gravity against him, used in "circular movements" if that makes sense (throws, trips, etc). It's a very idealistic martial art however it does have some useful applications. I remember someone saying, "Aikido is the art of making people fall while making it look like you threw them". It is mostly used for joint manipulation/tapouts with very little striking.
Heres my advice:
Want to learn how to grapple practically? Take BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu).
Want to learn how to strike practically? Take Muay Thai.
Want to be an overall well rounded figher? Take them both
Dont waste your time with Aikido, it's just not practical enough.
aikido's cool, youtube has oldschool video's of steven segal's seminars and ronduri's and such. but for more real world application i'd take sambo (i'm biased cause i'm russian) or a mix of stand up striking like muay thai/kickboxing/boxing and some grappling stuff like BJJ/wrestling/judo

Hop-kido and aikido are good vs. novice fighters that like to bull rush or try the frontal spaz attacks. You know the type of guy I'm talkin about here ... he comes in cockin his hand back like he's thrown' a softball or worse wind mills his way at you. In real world fights vs guys that have been around a little then the less agressive styles get their practioners asses kicked. There is no substitute for Mui-Thai/BJJ combination training DOMS. Seriously if you are going to train then that is the route to go. You've seen these styles used in UFC bouts.
Krav Maga is something to look at if your not so much interested in the Mui Thai style. It's what the Isreali secret service types use ... a kind of one and done sorta thing.
Reverse strikes from blocked punches/kicks that are followed with hip throws that land your opponent head first and end him are good Aikdo techniques but not so good against someone who has any training. You commit to those techniques when you attempt them and when that attempt is against someone who has any training you wind up getting waxed. Karate/Thi Kwon Do/Kung Fu/Aikido is just to light weight vs anyone with solid training.

They teach Aikido in rookie school. It's meant to hurt and disable your opponent. If you want to take someone out, it's good.

I'd do something more functional, like BJJ or sambo.
Aikido is not gay. It is like Jiu jitsu standing up. Ever get wrist locked then judo thrown? Or how about wrist locked from the bottom? Not fun. My brother takes Aikido and BJJ, he uses his Aikido wrist locks all the time to tap people
Aikido is also the hardest martial art to get ranked in
The real world application isnt very extensive, but there are some uses. It depends what your taking the martial art for, general fitness and interest in the art or real world application.

Steven Segal stuidies Aikido. Just thought you'd like to know that. Don't listen to BigDyl he doesn't know what he's talking about.

look it up.
friend's co-worker is 3rd level black belt, I think in Aikido. If he gets his hands on you...you're done.
Friend has been doing mui thay for years...he's fast enough to catch the aikido...but also smart enough to stay out of Aikido's 3 foot rule. (if that makes sense)

Some may or may not be at full speed
I have practiced Mixed Martial Arts since I was six years old. I have practiced with people from every string of styles and schools. My personal opinion is this: What works for YOU is the best and most effective martial art. I love BJJ and striking as in the Thai arts, but it is great to mix it up a bit with Aikido, Tai Chi, and even Thai Bo (just kidding).
In all seriousness though, I have applied concepts of Aikido in real street fights. It works great against drunks...haha. I guess it all boils down to the situation you are in. What may be great for one situation may not be great for another. That is why it is good to be well-knowledged and well-rounded. Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee's art) embraces this very idea and should be looked into if you are serious in considering study of the arts. So yes, Aikido is good and if available, should be studied. Don't get caught up in the style, get caught up with what you can use from it.
Also ST240, sparring in aikido is existent, and is often times very rigorous, especially when going up in level.
