How much Ram and Processor Speed do you have?

    447mb and 2.2 GHz

this is average, right? I have that and I have a cable connection, but my computer seems very slow the past couple of weeks, I did a virus scan, computer checkup, and rebooted, everything seems to be fine...

2.2 what? Clock speed doesn't really tell much about a computer.

and yes your ram is quite low...

how many applications run on your computer at most times?

such as instant messengers? maybe Photoshop....browser windows...virus protection running in the background...

Windows XP alone uses a decent amount of ram I believe

There is a difference between having a slow computer and a slow internet connection. Slow internet could be a number of things, I once had a NIC that was dying on me, would drop about one out of 10 packets and had horrific latency. I thought it wa smy provider until I swapped NICs. I forget if I did a loopback test or just took a wild guess, but my latency improved instantly and so did my usable bandwidth. I am not implying that could be your problem (not that likely), just that it could be a number of things.

It sounds like your RAM is shared memory, otherwise you should have 512MB I'd presume. I only have 512MB with WinXP SP2 on a 1.53GHz Athlon 1800+, its old, but I got it for free when it was the latest greatest processor and it still works fine. Just lame on games like Doom 3 or better.

I'm using 327MB of 512MB physical memory and I have plenty of windows open for a number of hours. I notice that Yahoo Messenger is using a huge 38MB and I'm not even talking to anyone on it nor am I streaming music.

I have 512MB of PC2100 DDR (133Mhz/266MHz effective) and an Athlon XP 2400+ mildly overclocked to 2.22GHz @ 148MHz FSB.

I dont work with computers as much as I used to, so one of these days people are going to be talking about Redhat 18 and Windows 2024, and I'll be remembering DOS 5.0 and QBasic, and piggybacked 30 pin RAM. I do want a computer upgrade, I just dont really need it so I haven't gotten around to it. I'm getting some life outta this one, and AMD gave it to me free! I've been on the internet since about 1989.

Why is Firefox 2.0 so SHITTY with copying and pasting?!?!?!?!?!

I feel you. I still remember most of the DOS commands. I need to get back in the groove. I do the occasional free lance thing here or there, and it ends up taking me longer than it should because I'm so rusty. For example, I had trouble setting up this wireless network for one of my clients a few weeks ago. I was very disappointed in myself.

    There is another one

I'm still pretty nifty in DOS. For years I missed the speed of the old DEFRAG. I have a machine sitting here of a friends for about the last 3 weeks, he can't get any Windows to install because of the onboard controller. I walked him through downloading the drivers online and putting them on a diskette, and then telling Windows during setup where to get the mass storage controller drivers, but somehow it didn't work for him. So eventually I have to get to that...

I still have my DOS 6.0 install disks and 6.2 upgrade. 6.2 had the best backup compression, although they were sued over it later and then 6.21 was released I think during the trial, and 6.22 was the compromise after the trial when Microsoft agreed to pay at least some royalties for some of the technology they were using. I am slow to upgrade with various things, I ran Win 3.11 until a Quake level editor forced me to adopt Win95. I also had NT 3.51 but I didn't use it much. Windows for Workgroups and DOS 6.2 was where I toyed with computers the most.

I've put together my own install disks for Slackware Linux back before they came preconfigured for generic CD ROMs etc, but I never compiled my own custom kernel or anything really nerdy like that. I mainly learned computers initially to keep my own stuff working, and then got interested in networking and databases.

Haha, hell yeah. I was like 6 when I got my first computer. It was a Tandy Color and it sucked balls. It had no storage device, so I had to write the programs to make it do stuff if I wanted to play aroudn wit hit. Woowo, sleeping meds are kicking my ass.

My first computer was a Timex Sinclair, it ran off a 9v battery or external wall wart, and had no permanent memory either. We had two of them, not sure why. Eventually we had an Apple IIe with I believe two floppy drives, a big deal back then. Eventually 8088s came out and things got even more fun.

The 8086 I believe was far too expensive for most people to posses. Thats around the time Zilog cleanroomed one of their processors but Intel locked them up in court long enough that they were never able to be a competitor. Zilog proved their case, which even back then as 'simple' as processors were was considered an amazing achievement with no insider information. That single event pretty much wiped Zilog off the map of ever being a true competitor, even though their product was cheaper and actually faster. Now you can occasionally see their chips in keyboards or embedded systems here or there, washing machines and the like.

The early history of computers and the internet is really fun to read, and is sure to make you a hit with the ladies.

First computer my dad had was something that I don't even remember the specs on. It couldn't do much of anything.

The first one I really used had a 16MHz processor and like 8-16MB of memory. I believe the HDD had 200MB of total space. I don't remember too many details; I was too young at the time.

p2-300 196mb ram laptop running 2000, i sold my p4 and athlon system, its a waste of power. This thing burns discs, reads posts and plays mp3's.

Anytime i hear someone needing a core 2 duo to do homework and check email makes me want to kick them in the nuts.

You're such a newb. I wrote the original 'minix' kernel before torvalds even knew what a memory register was.

Different speed connections. Looks like one is around a 3mb and the other near a 10mb service.

Some telling information about my pc:

    - when temperature rises above 25°, I have to open the case and put a vent next to it, else it will overheat every 30mins.
    - my PC can't handle surround sound. Instead, it choses a random direction and projects the sound there.
    - my sound dies at random times. Usually once per 2h.

That is without spyware, viruses, reg/cache overflow or outdated software.

My Inet connection is pretty good though. I tend to get a ping of around 20 on most servers. Somehow my DL speed is crap. It starts very high, but gradually drops down to like 60kbs.

I think it takes something like 18 minutes for an average Windows XP machine on the internet to become infected with something, so you are talking fresh install here? If you've fully updated every driver and still having problems then maybe its a setting in your CMOS that your system doesn't like, or perhaps your choice of where you put the cards in your computer. Some PCI slots put out more juice than others, and some share IRQs.

How close are you to that server? Are you sure they even have a 5mbit pipe? They can't promise you 5mbit to every server on the net, example, downloading off your buddy. He probably wont have a 5mbit pipe from his home.

I got 4.4mbit down and 341kbit up, decent but not as fast as RCN. Its good enough for me though otherwise I would indeed, be with RCN.
