    The Late Great John Lennon

John Lennon was killed on this day in 1980. It didn't mean much to me then, but it has come to mean a whole lot to me now. Growing up I didn't particularly care for the Beatles and I had a visceral reaction against John Lennon when I first saw his picture. But people change and I did too.

For those of you too young or not familiar with him, he was an artistic talent. He was also a human rights advocate. He participated in giant marches for peace and for "power to the people." Anyhow, someone shouting 'power to the people' over a megaphone to enormous crowds is not long for this world anyway.

    His songs were the best.

    I detest him.

So you wanted to murder this man because you, for some reason, despise him.

    Wow.

I would spare him on the single issue that his songwriting ability dwarfs that of any current artist.

I liked him as a person, but I didn't like his music.

All rock musicians have egos. It's the work product that sets him apart.

My wife had some music award show on our tv recently. I was listening as I read a book and I heard nothing but mediocre garbage. It is a sad state of affairs when garbage and the purveyors of garbage are lauded in such a manner.

Ball-less, soul-less music for bland mediocre people.

The guy is an icon with many qualities as a human bieng most of us lack. He was aware of who he was and it showed. What you see as being self-righteous I see as being self aware. He went through the various experiences of being a Beatle then walked away and went on with life the way he needed to for himself. His tallent was undeniable, his effect on world culture was profound, and his charitable contributions still continue long after his demise through foundations he set up as recipients of proceeds from his music sales. His ego was through the roof no doubt, but it was matched by both his tallent and what he gave of himself to the world.

Look at the entire person not just what you dislike about him DOMS ... he was a very well rounded human being.

If you'd walked into a music store back in the early 90's, you'd have seen a wide range of types of music. There was rocks, classic rocks, punk rock, heavy metal, alternative, rap, R&B, soul, funk, country, western, and on and on.

What are the options now? Rock, rap, country, and classic. Music has gone from an near-infinite buffet of varieties to a tasteless, soulless galosh.

The lack of worth ethic. The detachment from reality. And, more than anything else, the "It's someone else's responsibility" mentality. That shit is like a poison that's still rampant to this day.

In my opinion, the early '90s are about the same as now for music quality. I don't know. There aren't any songs from that period that I can recall.

Lennon worked very hard. He was prodigious in his work. One of his big songs w/ the Beatles was, 'I'm a Loser'....not 'that guy over there is a loser.'

He made a lot of songs, whoopdie-doo.

Out of curiosity, did he even actually do anything about the stuff he was bitching about? Did he start any foundations? Did he give away large sums of money? Did he try to get any law passed?

Great OP Decker and great post.

Some loved his music. Some liked it.

Some liked his politics; some didn't.

    But he did unique things.

    He left us too prematurely.

I was 10 years old, watching Monday Night Football, when a ticker-tape on the bottom of the TV said: "John Lennon has been shot. John Lennon has been pronounced dead."

I went and told my family that "some guy named John Lennon got shot and died."

    They gasped.

    Great OP.

You're profile says you are 46... which would make you a whole lot older than 10 years old in 1980

yep, agree 100%. Also, the "I don't want to take responsibility for my actions" goes along with this.

In what way did hippies have an 'it's someone else's responsibility' attitude?

They were much more outspoken than most groups today. They knew what was going on in the world and worked hard to try and change it.

Also I don't know if saying a lack of work ethic is fair either. They worked hard in their own way. Many set up their own communities and built their own houses, grew all their own food and didn't rely on the outside world for anything. This takes a lot of hard work.

They just didn't want to be part of mainstream culture... and looking at 1950s, early 1960s culture, I can't say I blame them.

No, I disagree. I've seen many deadheads. What do they do? They travel from city to city watching concerts and having no job or no life. They make enough money for gas and tickets and food by selling dope. There were always hundreds of arrests in Charlotte when they came to town. They trashed everything they came into contact with. They have no respect for anyone else's property.
Now, this is the type of hippie I'm talking about. Are there more than one type? Hmm?

Their basic premise is that everyone should be "free" to do what they want at any time. No law, no rules, nothing. They wanted to do whatever they wanted. of course, "whatever" was drugs and sex. They wanted to live in a fantasy world where things just magically happened.

Do you really think that this what the majority of hippies were doing?

So? As long as they aren't hurting anyone and are staying off welfare, who cares what they do?

Part of being "free" and dropping out of society includes not taking money from social programs... As long as they are not being a drain, I could care less.

The problem was that they couldn't do it. So they "came back to society" and they brought their "I don't have to do shit" attitude with them. But this is the real world, where things have to get done, so they left it to others.

If they couldn't do it, they shouldn't have compromised their morals by coming back to society. They should have just killed themselves.
