Propaganda vs Real Life in America

As we all know, the media propaganda in America is that our country is a land of freedom and opportunity where anyone can be what they want to be, live their dreams, be the best they can be, become rich and successful, and live the American dream of owning a home. This idea is incessantly conveyed by our culture, media, education system, and political establishment. It is a necessary illusion to keep everyone functioning in their place. And we are constantly fed success stories of individuals who thrive here.

However, despite the ideals of this image, here's the big picture about how things work in America and how people live. The reality is that in America, only a few people truly live the American dream. Those at the top who control the flow of economic resources and production capital (in socialist philosophy terms, they are referred to as the “haute bourgeoisie” class) are also the ones who get most of the resource flow even though they don't need it. And it's not just with the CEO's. The top sports players and top Hollywood stars in this country who get 20 million dollars per film or per season are easily getting extraordinary amounts of money that they don't even need. That's how things have always worked, especially in a capitalist country. Karl Marx’s prediction that capitalism would fail might have came true if a middle class hadn't been created in this country to act as a buffer zone between the high and low classes, giving the low class an incentive to move up to something higher so that they won't overthrow those in power. (Some intellectual historians have even argued that colleges and universities were created to create a middle class. e.g. Zinn, Chomsky)

In reality, the majority of people in this country live in slavery to their jobs just so they can keep up with never-ending bills and make ends meet. They never live the American dream. And the myth of “individual freedom” for all in America is just that, a myth, perpetuated to appease and motivate the masses of people, making each person feel important.

i've only read the excerpt you posted and will read the rest later but i want to make a quick comment on the above quoted paragraph first.

he seems to be arguing for a socialist state in America and attempting to paint a pretty picture of fairness and happiness in socialist states versus hate and misery in capitalist states. all i have to say is, yes we are all slaves to our jobs here because we need to survive, however we'd be doing the same in a socialist state except you wouldn't have a choice of carpenter, nurse, lawyer, businessman etc. you'd just get told what you're doing for the rest of your life and never expected to do anything more or less. capitalism promises the opportunity to get ahead, it is not a guarantee. i don't know how to explain it, but some people make it and others don't whether they get lucky, are smart or whatever it is (combination of factors). that is the way the world works, not everyone can be rich but atleast in a capitalist state joe shmoe can go to the bank, get a loan and open a business. in the former USSR my father had a business in which he would repair anything (noone ever bought new stuff in the USSR, once you bought something you kept it for life). his business was burned to the ground 3 times in a matter for a couple of years.

socialism is garbage, Marx was stupid and whoever wants to argue that go talk to my father who lived under that system his whole life only to walk away from everything for the sake of his family and move to America where his kids (me) had a chance of doing something with their lives'.

i don't agree at all with whatever this cat is talking about and i feel that when i read his article even more, i'll disagree that much more.

seems like a pessimistic point of view. propaganda is right. if people allow themselves to be slaves to their creditors, which is a problem here in america it doesnt mean we should move towards a socialist state.

and those players and actors getting 20 million a movie or season? not many started with money, so it seems they are living the american dream
